Joe Martin, an Ashland man who
had been committed to the countv jail
pending examination by the grand jury
on a statutory charge, escaped from
the jail sometime Monday night. It
seems that Martin was not locked in
a cell as is customary but had been
allowed to spend the night in the
corridor, and having made a saw out of
an old knife he cut one of the iron bars
protecting a sky light and using his
blankets for a rope, easily descended
to the grourd and made a clean get-a
way. The sheriff’s office made diligent
efforts to find him but up to Saturday
morning had not learned his wherea
bouts.
Mrs. Elizabeth McArvel, an old resi
dent of Rogue River died at Grants
Pass, Saturday. She leaves two sons
and three daughters, all grown up. In
terment in the cemetery in this city,
Mr. Roundtree who is visiting his
daughter, Mrs. Sam Walsh, is reported
ill this week.
