THE RESIGNATION OF SECRETARY BRYAN
Much speculation is being indulged in as to the prob
able effect of Secretary Bryan’s resignation: some news
papers holding that the result will be immediate war with
Germany, but this we doubt. It is reasonable to expect
the rupture with Mr. Bryan will
far to convince the
nations of Europe that this government is in earnest in its
demands and not to be put off like a child that does not
know its own mind. It may be that Germany realizing
a firmer hand controls our Ship of State, will concede
the justice oi our claims, at least in part and thus en
able us to come through the present crisis with honor,
without war and without the disgraceful humiliation
which for a time threatened to be our portion.
The note from our government, sent this week to Ger
many, the import of which Mr.Bryan is said to have ob
jected to, was published in the daily papeas yesterday
and is an able exposition of the position of the United
States in the controversy. While brief it is concise and
comprehensive, covering every phase of the matter in
plain everyday terms that cannot be readily misunder
stood. The tone of the communication from beginning to
end is eminently friendly, being much more so than had
been anticipated and if answered by Germany in like
spirit the difficulty will doubtless meet a peaceable solu
tion.
What objections Mr. Bryan had to the terms of this
note are unknown, but it is wellknown that his views on
international relations, like those held by him on many
other subjects are better suited to an ideal state of so
ciety which may exist sometime in the future than they
are to the present evil world. While an able man, and
we believe an honest one, he is not the person best quali
fied to direct the cotrse and control the destiny cf a
great nation in the present crisis.
Whatever the outcome may be, the action
Bryan in resigning his position was the best thing he
could do for himself and for the nation and the majority
of American people will so regard it.
