The currency bill has passed both houses and been signed by .the president
«nd the people of the United States may expect to feel the effects of it in a
short time. Of course it will take some time for business affairs to become
adjusted to the new system. That the new system will be an improvement on
the present one is the opinion of many of the best financiers of the nation. Let
us hope that their ex pectations will be realized.
The year 1913, just coming to a close has witnessed some radical changes in
public matters, chiet of which has been the new tariff schedules, the income
tax measure, and the new currency bill. What the effect of these changes in
the governmental policies will be remains to be seen, but if the measures are
applied according to the intent of the framers there is little doubt but that the
outcome will be beneficial to the great mass of our people though it may be de
trimental to the interests of the few who have been favored by the former pol-
ici-s of our government. Another innovation in public matters and 'one which
lhas come to stay, is the parcel post. Put on as an experiment it has proven
good and will doubtless lead to government ownership of other public utilities
in fact the question of government ownership of telephone and telegraph lines
is now under consideration in official circles and will be realized sooner or later.
