8 per cent per annum from the 15th day of July.

Origin of the Christmas Stocking.
From Italy comes «the legend from
which we are supposed to get the time
honored custom of banging up tlie
Christmas stocking. Good old St. Nlcli
olas of Padua used to throw long knit
ted purses tied at both ends into the
open windows of the very poor people,
»nd these purses were of yarn and not
unlike a footless stocking. Finally it
became the custom of the people to
hnng these empty receptacles out of
their windows on the night before
Christmas so that St. Nicholas would
pVit a gift Into them as be passed by.
By and by. when the coin of the realm
became scarce, toys were put lti for the
children and useful presents for grown
peoplp. In the north country, where it
was rather chilly at Christmas time,
the purses were hung on the mantel
piece. and It was believed that the
good old saint would come down the
chimney and till them. When these
purses went out of fashion stockings
were substituted and have been used
ever since.
