One summer's dny In the long ngo,
when you could meet a lightning rod
outfit nt every five miles on the high
way, one of the craft drove into the
town of Plainfield. In showing off bis
fine horses he ran over a hog. and the
bog limped squealing away. Jt was

man testified on his own behalf that
no malice existed. He and the elder's
hog had never met before. lie was
driving up to the hotel in a fancy way I

At the conclusion of the trial the

about forty others what he thought of
them, their town and their fathers and
mothers before them, and there was a
fight. In which he got badly banged up
and driven out of town. Of course he
wanted to get even. You must know
that there is a fellow feeling between
men who are skinning the public, and
it was quite natural that the elder's j
victim should select a tin peddler as
his instrument for carrying out his
plan.
A shallow river runs through Plain-

lined for a mile up and down with el
derberry bushes. Toward the last of

August the clusters of berries were a
sight to see. One could gather a wug-
onload in half a day. One day a tin
peddler stopped to gather a couple of
bushels. In answer to Inquiries be stilt

The water bonds are sold, the contractor is at work
on the dam and it will be a matter of days only until we
have a water system ready to supply the wants of the
citizens with water. Now get busy, let the outside world
know about Jacksonville’s many advantages as an ideal
home.
As stated in another column of this paper, the county
bonds for the construction of permanent roads carried by
a large majority at the polls Saturday, and now that the
consent of the people has been obtained it will be up to the
county court to establish the legality of the procedure.
There are several methods, either of which could be fol
lowed to arrive at the desired result, viz: a decision by
our supreme court sustaining the action of the county
court in calling the special election. It seems to us that
the quicker the matter is decided, one way or the other
the better it will be for all concerned. ’ Let us hope the
question will be settled speedily and if the decision is
favorable, then get to work.
