Ofltcial Paper of the City of Jacksonville, Oregon
CIRCUIT COURT
A weekly newspaper published every Saturday at the county seat of Jackson
County, Oregon. D. W. B agshaw , Editor.
We have a climate not excelled anywhere, neither
too hot in summer or too cold in winter, but just the tem
perature most conducive to health, in addition to which
the rainfall is never exessive, neither do we suffer from
drouth as do some other less favored regions. Situated
as we are between arms of the foothills, the soil receives
moisture through sub-irrigation, sufficient to keep vegeta
tion growing luxuriantly during the summer months, the
richness of the soil, in connection with the proper climatic
conditions making this valley an ideal spot for the fruit
grower and gardener.
Not very many years ago the U. S. Patent Office, re
fused to grant a patent for, or consider “anything so
foolish as a flying machine.” At Los Angeles this w’eek
aviators have made a record of 55 miles on hour, but such
is the march of progress, ever onward. The impossible
things of yesterday are achievements of to-day and re
garded as commonplace affairs to-morrow.
Superintendent Wells is deserving of special praise
for the efforts he is making to create interest in better
spelling, by means of the contests which he is inaugur
ating in the schools of the county. Correct spelling is
one of the most essential parts of a good education and
anything tending to improve the orthography of the
pupils in our public schools should be encouraged.
In another column of this paper appears a letter from
Governor Benson to Judge II. K. Ilanna, written to the
latter in acceptance of his resignation as Circuit Judge of
this district. The letter is a glowing tribute to the char
acter of the retiring officer showing the high esteem with
which his services to the people of the state are regarded.
