braska and Iowa, that have in numer-
i >us years produced ’a corn crop of a
billion bushels.
According to the
Globe, a newspaper of Atchison, the
government estimate of the past year’s
total crop in the United States is 2,-
767,316,000 bushels. Kansas began the
growing of Alfalfa in 1879 and if more
had taken it up at that time, it is esti
mated that the state would be much
richer-to-day. Now hogs are marketed
in the Missouri River packing centers
that never tasted corn.
How much
better are the opportunities in this
Pacilic|Northwest country for growing
hogs on alfalfa and other foods than
corn than in the Middle West where
alfalfa does not thrive so well as it
dues here.
Grants Pass and Roseburg are hoth
assured new passenger depots by the
Southern Pacific. In line with the de
velopment and growth that are in evi
dence in Southern Oregon, that part of
the state is getting too big for facili
ties that have heretofore proved ample.
An army of men are at work build
ing railroads up the Deschutes River
to the interior of the State. The
winter season is not stopping the work
and during the coming year trains will
be run into Central Oregon, making a
wide agricultural region accessible to
farmeis.
New railroads, too, are
entering the coast country, while in
the Southern end of the state, railroad
builders are pushing north from Klam
ath Falls to Natron on the new South-
ern Pacific line.
Electric projects are
active in the Willamette Valley. On
the whole it looks like the coming year
will be a record one in railroad building
for Oregon.
The Correct Tim«
to stop a cough or cold is just as soon
as it starts—then there will be no
danger of pneumonia or consumption.
Just a few doses of Ballard's Hore
hound Syrup taken ut the start will
stop the cough. If it haa been running
on for sometime the treatment will be
longer, but the cure is sure.
