The Slattuck peach orchard thre»
miles from Merlin, now owned by J. F-
Dora, is a pro f that cannot be contro
verted that peaches are one of the most
profitable fruits grown in Rogue River
Valley, and also that peach trees heie
are not short lived as in nearly every
other peach district of the United
States, but lives as long and are as
hearty as apple and pear trees. This
orchard, which consists o” 12 acres, is
now 26 yeras old and has never missed
a crop for 23 years, beginning to bear
at three years.
The yield of this orchard for 1907 was
a little above 14,000 boxes, of 20 pounc s
each. For 1903 the crop was 14,500
boxes, all first clas.s peaches and ship
ped to Portland and Seattle markets.
For this year the yield is estimated to
be fully 16,000 boxes and the fruit is
of the finest quality and size. The en
tire crop has been contracted to a Se
attle firm at S5 cento a box. cash f.o.b.
Mellin This will give a gross return
for the orchard of $13,690, or $1333 an
acre.
To produce and market the crop fir
this year in this orchard will cost, at a
fair estimate, 45 cents a box. This is
on a basis of 20 cents a box for cultiva
ting, pruning and spraying the trees
and for thinning the fruit, and of 25
cents a box for picking, packing, boxes,
paper an 1 hauling to the lailroad at
Merlin. To handle the 16,000 boxes of
peaches at 45 cents a box will amount
to $7,109. This would leave a profit of
$6,409 on the 12 acres of orchard. As
a dividend produces this orchard is by
the above returns earning 10 per cent
on an investment of $61,000, or $5,333
an acre.
That a Rogue River Valley peach or
chard should earn a net income of over
$100 J an acre sounds like a fairy tale
to a farmer who is meeting his expec
tations if he gets a return of $25. an
acre from his wheat or corn field or $75
an acre from his alfalfa meadow, or to
the business man whose gross income, !
on a stock of goods worth twice what
the Shattuck orchard cost, is no more
then the net income is on this property.
And the pear, apple, nectarine orchards
and vineyards of Rogue River Valley
are as good money makers as are the
peach orchards. —Fruit Grower.
