SEASON OF 1903
Once again we have swung around
the circle of our national holidays
which marks the end of a glorious year
of plenty, and as we are nearing the
birth of a new year we look back into
the not distant past on matters that
will remain fresh in our minds for years
to come. Be these acts great or small,
good or bad there is profit to be de
rived from them.
The world does not owe anyone a liv
ing, but the earth is amply provided
with the necessities of life which it
will freely give to those who are wor-
thy. So, dear reader make your new
year resolutions with a vim. Devel-
ope that which you know to be the
I best from past experience and reject
that which you know to be bad.
The world is apparently full of evil
likewise it is full of goed. Good is
derived from evil, evil is derived from
goad. Without one we do not have
the other. The stronger the evil tem
ptations the stronger will be the good.
All classes of people have been be-
nefitted during the year just drawn to
a close; true some individuals have met
with misfortunes, but the nation as a
whole has benefitted. The farmers
have in the past year marketed about
$7,778,000,000 worth which by far sur
passes the products of the mines.
Thus the farmer is entitled to enjoy a
merry Christmas.
The laboring man can justly celebrate
with a free heart because labor has
been in demand at fair pay. Although
the skilled mechanic draws only one-
fifth of the amount he produces he
may feel happy that there is employ
ment for millions of the unskilled.

the sunny side. We must not forget
that upon the homes of some of our
rea’ers, since last Christmas tide, a
shadow has fallen and the mantle of
sorrow has wrapped the inmates in its
somber folds. Other homes are like
the empty nests that hangs ou the with
ered bough desolate because the life
and song went out with the birds. New
I homes have
been made new ties
formed and old ones severed, but in
our onward march it is not well to
stop to measure the load each one
carries. No life is either all sunshine
or all storm. If the new year brings
prosperity, let us rejoice; is adversity,
let us be brave. Let us be thankful
that “our lines have fallen in pleasant
places:” that “it is as well with us as
with us as it is,” and use our utmost
endeavors to make this a happy year.
Let us quickly turn over the sad page
and look at the bright picture that
awaits us; let us quickly penetrate any
cloud that may float o’er our pathway
and view at length the beautiful silver
lining beyond.
