Thirty Dollars.
The bank at Talent was entered last
Monday night and relieved of about
$30. The robbers gained entrance
through the back door. More money
would undoubtedly have been secured
but for the fact that Cashier C. W.
Wolters maks daily remittances to the
First National bank in Medford.
The theif secured aswitch lamp from
the railroad company, went to a near
by carpenter shop where he opened a
chest of tools and took a saw and sev
eral chisels and with these he broke
into the rear of the bank by prying
off a door lock. The safe in the bank
having been left opened he had no diffi
culty in reaching the small money
drawer inside, which he pried open
with a chisel and possessed himself
of the $.3) in change which itcontained.
From here he went to the postoffice
and with the saw stolen from the car
penter’s chest he partially sawed the
lock from the door to this building.
The presumption is that he was fright
ened while working at this job by some
person astir about town.
FIND GAS IN
MALHEUR COUNTY
A company formed at Ontario to
drill for oil encountered gas and were
forced to stop drilling on account of
the gas pressure.
The directors wil1 apply to the city
of Ontario for a franchis to furnish the
town with gas for lighting and heating
purposes.
The directors believe that they will
strike oil at a lower depth and a great
er supply of gas.

At the city election in Ashland last
Tuesday the Drys carried the day
by a majority of 166. There was 495
dry votes cast and 329 wet votes.
It was claimed by ths saloon element
that Ashland would vote wet at this
election on account of Medford and
Jacksonville being wet and getting
trade that belonged to Ashland.

NLW POSTMASTER
Portland will have a new postmaster
in a few weeks, but who it will be is a
matter of guess work. Senator Bour
ne has presented the name of J. C.
Young, who has only been a resident
of Portland about one year. Senator
Fulton has asked that the name be
held up but it ¡3 quite probable that
Young will be the next postmaster in
Portland.
Eilis, in who3e district Portland is
will not take any past in the matter,
he says that it is a personal appoint
ment of Bourne's because Bourne is a
Portland man.
The Portland office is a first-class
office and interests every otlice in the
state.
