Prof. J. N. Miller, the energetic
pedagogue, who got a first-grade cer­
tificate in Josephine countys. after be­
ing turned down by Supt. Daily and his
examiners, several times, has gone to
Williams Creek, to teach the school in
that district, says the Southern Ore­
gonian.
H. S. Van Dusen, master fish warden
of Oregon, while in Grants Pass, gave
out the ultimatum that the Rogue River
Water Company would either have to
put in a new fishway or blow out their
<lam across the river in that city, it
is the biggest obstruction in that
stream and prevents fish from ascend­
ing.
The Carter Land Company of Ash­
land has sold its ¡entire apple crop,
which it is estimated will aggregate
8000 or 9000 boxes, to W. N. White, of
New York. There are about two cars
of Gravensteins, the remainder being
principally Newtownsand Spitzenburgs.
It is understood that the up price on
the apples is $1.75 per box, f. o. b. Ash­
land.
It is amazing to consider the possibili­
ties if the sun were some other color.
If it were blue, for instance, there
would be only two colors in the world,
blue and black; or if it were red then
everything would be red or black.
In
the latter case we should have red snow
red lillies, black grass, black clear sky
and red clouds. There would be a little
variety, however, if the sun were green.
Things that are now yellow would still
remain that color, but there would be
no reds, those cheery hues that make
the world so bright and pleasant.
F. H. Rice, who has been a resident
of Ashland and vicinity for some fifteen
years, diet! Saturday and was buried
from the baptist Church of which de­
ceased was a member. Rice is reputed
to have been a man of education and in
his earlier manhood is said to have been
in affluent circumstances in Massachu­
setts whither he removed from his nu­

George Putnam, news editor of the
Journal, is to take charge of the Med­
ford Tribune, Jacksonville Times and
Southern Oregonian. The latter two
publications are a semi-weekly and a
weekly, respectively, and may be con­
solidated. For a number of years Mr.
Putnam has been with the Journal, com­
ing to Portland from San Francisco as
telegraph editor. About a year ago he
became news editor, a post he has occu­
pied with distinction since.
Medford
has wanted a good, wideawake news­
paperman for some time, and the choice
finally settled on Mr. Putnam.
