Dallas "Comparatively little
highway work will be performed
in Polk county during the pres
ent season," says the Observer,
"although there is need for the
expenditure of considerable sums
for maintenance of roads and
the construction of new ones.
The fact is the county had only
$11,000 in the road fund at the
beginning of the year, and must
of necessity make it spread over
a large amount of territory."

LETTER FROM ENGLAND
Extracts from a letter from
Mrs. Mildred Campbell to her
father, T. J. Fryer, from Brigh-
ton.England, dated May 7:
"I feel better hern than any
place I have yet been in England.
We are not one hundred yards
from the sea and it is lovely and
refreshing. Brighton is a sum
mer resort. A promenade about
forty feet wide runs for five
miles along the front with chairs
and benches to rest everywhere.
Two large amusement piers run
out into the sea with theatres on
them and band concerts daily.
There are about 200,000 people
here. It is . supposed to be one
of the safest spots in England
now, but when there is any
fighting at sea nearby we can
hear the guns easy enough.
"This war is no play; it is hell.
But thinking people seem to feel
that the United States came in
just at the right time. England
was about bled for money and
France for men. If they could
only get something to stop those
submarines, the end might be in
sight, but as it is now no one
dares predict the end as it seems
a long ways off, maybe years.
The Germans are being driven
back on the western front but
our losses are tremendous. The
Canadians lost 16,000 men at
Vimey Ridge. The Germans
submarined a hospital ship
nine miles from here the
ther day. There were
several hundred German prison
era aboard. They started a
mutiny and started for the boats.
The machine guns were turned
on them and about two hundred
killed, including a German
general. They had aome German
prisoners working down here
close by making them plant
potatoes, and it was discovered
they had cut the eyes out of the
potatoes before putting them in
the ground. There is nothing too
small or too big fo" them to do."

week, they were arrested for
parking their car in restricted
territory. On arriving. at the
police station they were released
with instructions not to do it
again. As Mrs. Moore and Mrs
Walker were with them, the

arrest was accepted in Independ
