The Woodburn Independent says that if Mr
Hughes is elected President he "might light
Mexico." What would he fight Mexico for?
The state of Oregon certainly needs more than
one normal and as to whether it is located at
Pendleton or Weston not many particularly care.
Both these towns have started an ugly fight which
if continued, will disgust so many voters that
neither one will ever get a normal.
Just after the Monitor had said that you don't
hear much about the tariff in the present cam
paign, Walter L. Tooze, Jr., goes over to Browns
ville and says something about it. We attribute
this to Mr. Tooze giving credence to a rumor that
there was a man in the audience who wants a
tariff on prunes.

The Astoria pork bill failed to pass congress, it
being side-tracked for investigation by the secre
tary of the navy. While but a few of our people
have any great "fear of a foreign foe", still a
naval base is a nice thing to have, and if Mr.
Secretary Daniels concludes to distribute any, we
hope he will give Astoria one. If he becomes
very liberal, we will also take one for Tillamook,
Newport and Marshfield.
There will be a joke on the November election
ballot. The word "Progressive" will be printed
