AT A SALARY OF $1,000 A NIGHT.
Is a tune, and it la not so unpleasant: but. n for doing any singing, you can't
di) It, and you nilRht as well give up the tliouRlit."
Mr. llirascr turned I'lum color and ulareil und Fald:
"Hut you are utterly mistaken, Mra lioser, to think that a manager of an
opera troupe Is not a JuiiKe of good sltu'intr. He waid that I had a tenor voice
that would put Caruso out of business if j r.perly trained. Don't you think he
knew what he was talking ubout?"
''It would seem so, but"
''Thtrs are no huts shout It! lie said I should go and call on his friend
(his evening ut 9 o'clock, nnd by 'he I.ord Hurry, I am going! It's only about
ten blocks from here, nnd I can be bac k In an hour."
"Well, I hop,, you will come back with k'sk) news," said Mrs. Bowser as he
started uwuy.
As Mr. Hmvser sot a block away from the house he bt Ran to sing "Ben
Holt". That was the song he was goiiiK to stng before the friend, and he
wanted to bo s'ire of his notes. He had svitig one stanza ot the sonjt when a
policeman on the other side of the street ial:ed out:
"Hey, yuu old nmn, cut thut out. will you?"
"Sir, were you speaking to me?" asked Mr. Bowser.
"You bet I was. We don't allow anybody to go around HUng saws at mid
night. Why. you almost sent a chill over me! You want to quit that."
"I was Ringing, sir." explained Mr. Bowser with great dignity.
"But 1 say cut that out!" shouted the ollker. "1 know the sound of a file
when I hear It "
Mr. Bowser walked on a few steps und then headed for his family drug
store. It wns a lazy evening for the druggist nnd he had sat down and was
drowsing. As Mr. Bowser opened the door he struck up In his best tenor voice
that dear old song "Ben Bolt." He hadn't got out ten words of It when the
druggist lump' d a foot high and exclaimed:
"What in blaxes alls you. Bowser, to come In here and shout and whoop
4 and scare a feller Into fits?"
"I niine In singing," said Mr. Bowser as nis race ren.
"Singing? Why. man. It was a rasping, grating, murderous noise that
was a tit tiling to scare half the babies on the block Into flts!"
Mr. liowser went out of the store without another word. When he got
home Mrs. Bowser pleasantly said:
"Wasn't the gentleman home?"
"Mrs. Bowser." he replied, pointing a finger at her. "you and I must
have a long talk some day soon! Things can't go on In this way! There
must be a divorce or something there must be. I have borne and borne
and borne, but 1 fciiall bear no longer! I will now retire to the library
to write some business letters, and If anyb-ny calls for me you can leii
em 1 cannot le disturbed, and be durned to 'em!"
