NOTABLES IN
THE LIMELIGHT
Count von Moltke, German
Army's Chief of Staff.
It mav he "nobody's huHine-fa" how a candidate sta .d
on bo me ismies but the people generally make it their busi
nen8 on election day.
A few quarts of royal blood have already been Hpilled
in the now-going. on European fracan. "l is a pity that ii
litis not been all that kind.
One of the Oregonian editors has resigned to tiocept a
position as Rill ilanley's campaign manager which indi
catej that Hill will carry the iinual paraphernalia anyway.
Several Oregon newnpapers ore rejoicins over the defeat
of Joe Foraker for senator in Ohio proclaiming it a great
progressiva victory. As Harding, who defeated hnn, jm
just an Htrong a standpatter as Foraker ever was, there in
no cause for the joy.
)
Recaustf it was alleged that the presiding judge errored
in instructing the jury at the flint trial, Polk county had to
stand the exptiise of a second trial which resulted in the
same verdict an the first and if the case was tried twenty
more times the name verdict would bo returned. How
long the people will submit to have thedr pockets picked
in this way when they have it within their power to remedy
the evil we do not know. PerhapH forever.
If it the duty of a Democratic newspaper, or any news
paper, to support the made-in Oregon movement, why is il
not its duty to oppose a eustomu tariff that admits to the
Oregon markets free of duty miiny products also produced
in Oregon? Oregonian.
While the Monitor is not a democratic newspaper we
cannot resist asking if it is not also thu duty of the Ore
gonian, or any other newspaper, to support a customs
tariff that admits to the Oregon markets free of duty many
products not produced in Oregon?
Having the Philippine Islands on our hands, tl e United
States is at a disadvantage in case of war with a stronir foe.
We would be obliged to send ships and mn over there for
the protection of tho Islands and undoubtedly good Ameri
can blood would be shed for an alien people who resent
our possession. A hill row pending in congress w hich will
eventually give independence to the Filipinos if passu!
may not please certain American capitalists and corpora
tions who have "business interests" there but our people
as a whole will be much better off.
We feel sorry for Doc iSnnth and Rob Booth. They have
been wandering over the state in the intense of theii
candidacies for govt rnor and senator believing that they
bud some chance of winning wlun suddenly like a bolt of
lightning out of a clenr sky ernes (he "announcement"
that all the democrats in the atatt are going to vote for
Witbycombe and in exchange for this splendid non parti
anship on the part of the democrats a like number of re
publicans will vote for Chamberlain. Therefore, it is all
settled except for the mere ratification at the general
election.
The Congressional Record of August 8, page U(
quotes Speaker Clark as saving:

"put one over" the Speaker in order to avoid representing
Oregon at the funeral of Mrs. Wilson. Mr. Hawley should
