date from Salem through Independence and to Albany. It

road. With this road laid out, all the main travel from
Portland south will pans through Independence. This is
worth inventigHing by the people of Independence.

Cultivate Community Friendship
In the everyday businefH of trying to make money,
majority of our people forget there are oihsr people that
they should know. While this fact is true among neigh
Dors and Dullness rneti ana farmers it is even more to in
different communities. Dallas last week and the week be
fore made their nrist break in community visitation and
while there was an incentive- -the county fair the idea
independent of the fair, is a good one. Dallas and Inde
pendence both are too claniih. They carry the stay at home
plan too far. Ho many business men in Independence
do you suppose visits the Buena Vista, Airlir, Kickreall,
Suver, Eola, Perrydale or McCoy country in a year? We
believe we are safe in saying that not a business man has
knocked oil' from his books or business this year and visit
ed the farmers and the bunnies men around the adjoining
towns.
We should cultivate oomru unity friendship. We should
learn where the farms are and who art the farmers. W
ahouhi know our county. To do business successfully we
must know the people with whom we may do business. If
we dont care for our surrounding country should we ex
pect them to care for us? II we set back like wooden sol
diers, will they look at us otherwise than as little tin dolls.
Business isbusinsss and from a purely selfish standpoint
alone, Independence should learn who the people of Polk
ounty are.
The Monitor every week tollsof something doiag among
the farmers. Its editor has visited not only Dallas and
Monmouth, but Rickreall, Perrydale, McCoy, Huena Vista,
Eola and Alrlie as well. In doingthie we have learned first
handed things t he merchant of Independence should know
These communities have needs that the people of Indepen-
dene might help them to get. They know but little of
Independence, because Independence has not seen tit to
visit them. They say we know the people) of Salem, Mo
Minuvllleor Albany, which i true but the question is
why don't they know the people of Independence? It is
because Independence does not create community friendli
ness. It does not oarry the doctrine of Independence away
from home. It does not seek to make new friends. That
is the secret in a nut shell,
Take Care of the Farmer
While we are waiting for tlie inanufaoturies and the
pay roll let us take care of the interests of the farmer.
Independence can be the farmers' center of this county
by doing the little tilings that count for farm betterment

are the irre at factors for the town's stability. The wealth
i f this county should not be c -initi'd by what the soil is ns
eased at. but at what its returns are. The idle soil like the
,buried dollar has no value. How many idle acres a-e there
in Polk counts'? How niuoh wenlt ' is dormant because
farmers either do not find the time tt till the soil or do not
realize the value of this idle land? Would it be of value to
the town of Independence to expert our farms and learn
what the farmers are doing mid what their neighbors are
doing? Would it be of benefit to the farrows? If it would
be, we should take up the offer of the expert in this section
and get busy.
Establish Your Grades and Curb Lines
The paving of Monmouth street has demonstrated one
thing thoroughly and that is, that the city should uryey
the town, establish grades and locate the curbing lines on
all thocity streets. Then when streets are paved they should
conform to the city survey.
On Monmouth street most of the curbing on ths
street had to be taken out, necessitating a double expense
to those who had put in curbing to beautify their places.
If thocity would survey those streets and set the grades per
manently it would mean better streeU in the residence
section.

That Drinking Fountain
How cool and refreshing it is to have a drinking foun
tain on the main corner of the town when you come from a
long, dusty drive. Cities that have established these foun
tains would not dispense with them under any consideration
Iney are just paved streets, electric light, city water
and sewerage, hard to get in the first place, hut harder to
get along without after you have onoe had them. They are
just like the new pocket in your young son's first shirt.
The editor the Monitor is in reoipt this week of a copy
of the Roads, Highways and bridge laws of Oregon, also a
copy of the Election laws, the same coming to it from the
odioe of Ben W. Olcotl, Secretary of the State; any of our
readers desiring to look up road or eleotion matters may
have the prirelege of looking over these books at any time
The irriduciable school fund of this state has just been
apportioned and Polk with 4803 school children is allowed
8,789.49. Theieare in the state 197. 110 children and" l'olk
is the fifteenth county in population of school children.
The Pendleten Round Up promises to be a lively affair
again this yar. Pendleton certainly worked out an enter
tainment that was unique when tney planned the Round
Up feature for an annual fair.

tics and data have been collected

the decrease in the number of juvenile

afternoons the children gather for
work. In Cleveland a temporary build
ing was erected for the storing of the

the summer the gardeners hold a flow
er and vegetable market when they
