COMBAT EASTERN MAIL ORDER HOUSES
The eastern mail order house i9 one of the gre atest
menaces with which the merchants have to contend. The
average merchant has no plan with which to combat this en
croachment on hia rightful trade,' and with the inauguration
of the parcel post, a concerted plan .f righting for trade,
becomes necessaay.
The newspaper men and the manafaclurers doing b si-
neea in Oregon are the first to recognize this.
Saturday the Willamette valley printers met in Albany
and evolved a plan which is to be enlarged an ! made a
strong factor for the development of business for the home
merchant. This plan is as follows:
Every newspaper represented at this meeting, and all
valley papers that will co-operate with the Willamette Edi
torial Association, agreed to work co-operatively to bring
about the development of the home trade plan.
Every paper in the association agrees to run an electro
type on the front of their first page which in fact states,
"patronize home industries and home merchants, this saving
$20,000,000 to Oregon every year.
Arrangements were made to have a home development
page of advertising weekly which will be sold to to.) adver
tisers at a minimum, designating products that the mer
chants have for sale, many of which will be Oregon maun
factured goods.
The manafacturers association is willing to co-operate
with the merchants in this plan, and they now have a woman
employed who is organizing clubs of women in every city
in Oregon to combat the foreign trade menace to Oregen.
At Salem two hundred and fifty women are united in
a club to patronize the home merchants. The same plan
should be, and will be worked out in Independence. If we
expect to build up a big manafacturing industry in Oregon,
we must support the home manafacturers by buying only
Oregon made goods. Every time we buy an rTlicle made
in the east or of some foreign brand not made in Oregon,
we are just putting that much of a stumbling block in the
way of the man who employs our neighbors in his factory
or mills.
Banks, stores and business men of different trades and
professions send to St. Paul, New York, Chicago or Minne
apolis for their advertising calendars, check books, letter
heads and envelopes, thus making it harder for Oregon
printers and lithographers to live and make a decent income.
Montgomery & Ward and Sears it Roebuck are not tho only
mail order firms taMngthe merchants trade from them.
Every mail brings hundreds of circulars to the homes of the
farmer or town residents of this post office and these big
houses must get returns or they would not be flooding your
customers with circulars.
Trade unions have their organizations, there are strong
commercial clubs in almost every city in Oregon , the farmers
are getting their granges to get the results, and the wool
growers have organ!zations that go scientifically into the
matters connected with their industries, but in Oregon the
retail merchant, the newspapers and the Oregon mana
facturers have showed less result of systematic organization
than any of the trades or business enterpriees in the state.
The manafacturers are iust commencing to get togethft for
results, and the printers made their most effective step t
Albany Saturday, but the retail merchants have only or
ganization3 locally in a few places. They could best get re
sults by working together. The Monitor think there is an
opportunity for us to help our co iditions by organizing for
the results desired-

DEVELOP ALL THE INDUSTRIES HERE
Independence is progressing in more lines than one and
this progress i9 permanent. There has been an idea pre
valent among some that the hop industry is the hinge of
success for this city. This i3 a mistaken idea and one that
hurts the town and su: rounding community more than we
realize. While the hop business is a big factor, it is not
the hinge or pivot of the city w elfare or the success of the
people throughout this section. The land around Inde
pendence is undoubtedly the best in the valley and the
crops raised here are unequaled. In vegetables, fruit and
hay we believe wj can and do produce crops equal in returns
ptr acre to that produced in any section of the state. While
the hop business during years of high prices brings an im
mense amount of money in circulation here, the people
must learn that the country dees prosper without this in
dustries big income. The hay farmer, the dairyman, the
raiser of fine sheep, horses, cattle or hogs, the successful
orchard'stsand ihe diversified farmer are all factors that
help keep the wheels of Buccets moving in this country.
With a few good marafacturies and a steady pay roll, In
dependence would be the best town in the valley. What
we need here is the co-opera tion of the people to develop all
our resources and bring to us all tin- factories and mills
that can be made to pay.
