    MOTORISTS IN DEATH VALLEY
SHOES
SHOES
Death valley, tlie terror o f the des
ert and the country many believe that
God hot only forgot but uever beard
of, lias been lamed and made safe for
motorists as a scenic spot which
seriously rivals Yellowstone National
park for beauty.
Death valley, scintillating in the sun,
will lure motorists o f today as It lured
weary prospectors of old, but Its sting
has been removed. No longer will the
parched traveler seek In vain for the
water hole he cannot find or for the
trail he has lost in the mesi|ulte.
A message which turns upside down
the popular and nation-wide opinion
held of this fabled valley, which In
cubated the fame of “ Borax” Smith
and "Death Valley” Scotty, Is being
sent to the world by the touring bureau
j o f America’s largest motoring or
ganization, the Automobile Club of
Southern California, for the purpose
of removing the curse of the malig
nant rumors, which It says are un
founded.
Already the first steps have been
taken. The Southern California Auto
mobile club has erected 1,220 metal
roatTsigns to make Death valley fool-
i proof to the motoring visitor. This Is
j the largest number of road signs ever
erected for n similar purpose.
Contrary to what might be expected,
! this does not remove the romance o f
I the desert, but the story brought out
o f Death valley by members g f the
crew who erected the slgnnlposts puts
an available romance Into the spot
which can he plumbed by every auto-
mobile owner In the United States.—

Th e dictionary informs one that
a “ gob” is “ a mass or lump, as of
mud or m eat; a large or good-sized
m outhful; also a large sum, as of
money,” but uot a word about sailor
or seaman. How the word came to
be applied to the American blue
jacket is a matter of mystery, but
the “ gob” himself has done it, and,
despite all officialdom, “ gob” he is
to his messmates.
“ Every naval officer resents the
use of the term,” says Herbert Corey
in the National Geographic Maga
zine. “ Not one will concede there
is such a thing or a word as gob. It
w ill be admitted that it does not
sound sweet and pretty, any more
than ‘chow’ or ‘hike’ or any of the
other one-syllable words that came
into use through war. But as the
sailors call themselves gobs (and
never by any chance refer to them
selves as tars or bluejaoketR or sea
men) and unquestionably discov
ered or invented this name, 1 sub
mit that they are a sufficient au
thority.”
