Marking tin lire o f battle at Sa
lem church and close beside the
famed plank road that lends from
Fredericksburg to Chancellorsville
is a monument erected to.lie* Twen
ty-third Jersey infantry by the
state o f Now Jersey. It is a grace
ful shaft surmounted by the statue
o f a soldier chiseled in gray mar
ble, like many other battlefield me
morials, but it is one o f the few, if
not the only shaft on s battlefield,
which pays homage alike to friend
and enemy. On one side New Jer
sey lovingly honors the members of
the Twenty-third regiment, who ad
vanced into ternflo rifle fire in the
woods on Salem heights, and on the
other is graven the tribute o f the
state to the Alabama men who held
the line during the two fearful hours
o f a May day in 18(13, when death
m the falling dusk took heavy toll.
