Mr. Townley (very matter-of- fact)—Yes; sometimes they seem almost as satisfactory aa an electric fan.—Buffalo Transcript. CR1SCO 9 Pounds Bed of O ld Clndere Believed Effica c io u s In Greece— Prep ostero us Rem edy fo r the Colic. When a Greek baby is sick and all other remedies fail, a bed of cold cinders is very generally used as a last resort. The cradle is filled with old ashes and the infant is buried in them. The American nurses have never been able to discover what the benefit to be derived from this curi ous custom was supposed to be. The cure for colic is even more curious. When the baby has a se vere colic the ponds in the environ* of the house are diligently searched by members of the family and all the frogs are captured. These are placed alive on the child’s abdomen. It ia a very tiresome treatment, as some one must »it and keep the frogs from hopping off the patient. No thought is given to the terror these jumping j frogs may have for the child. Among the gypsies that wander over the Balkans the work of the Red (’roes nurses is more difficult It will take years of preparation and education to enable them merely to begin to understand the idea of child welfare.
