Our Institutions of Higher Learning Provincial About the Others By JA M ES R. ANGELL, P resident Yale University I t is interesting how very provincial our American institutions of high learning are about other American institutions, and how littl# they know what is going on outside their own sphere of activity. I t is certainly necessary th at we should take a reasonably intelligent outlook of those things which are being done about us ; the m atter of the pre<-eptorial system at Princetou ,and how it is working o u t; how our friends at Amherst are succeeding in their attem pt to revive interest in the classical studies and how H arvard is succeeding in its endeavor to in troduce a type of general exam ination. It is a m atter of interest th at wi should know how in the Middle West the great institutions are endeavoring to work out some combination of the professional with the classical edu cation. These are all things that any man who is interested in higher edu cation should have some knowledge of and some interest in. I feel th at there is a considerable opportunity of improving our rela tions among American institution^ of higher learning by some more self- conscious exam ination of the educational movement as it goes on in cen ters other than our own. ■M M ethodist Sunday School at 10 a. m.
