The fellows who voted for a change will get it.
The cabal that forced C ox’ nomination at San Fran
cisco deserted him on election day.
It appears that the wets back East didn’t take any
stock in the Anti-Saloon league story that Cox was wet.
Mr. Harding smokes cigarettes. The American peo
ple will never be contented until they learn what brand.
It was the straight vote that retired Chamberlain
and if the election was held over again next week Cham
berlain would win.
The landslide went over the one of 1904 and Roose
velt was a more popular man than Harding and Cox a
better man than Parker.
The principal objection to a landslide is that it car
ries into office a large number o f undesirables whom the
people must tolerate until the next election.
The democratic party had better return to the side
o f William Jennings Bryan. Under Bryan’s leadership
it may not win, but it will always be nearer being right.
The Multm>mah county vote on congressman indi
cates that the landslide saved Mr. McArthutf and the
chances are best that there w on’t be any landslide two
years hence.
Mr. Harding will have to make a choice between the
two factions of the republican party that) elected him
president. When he does that the big row starts. The
losing side will have two able champions in Senators
Johnson and Borah.
The most horrible example of safron partisanship
was displayed by the Oregon Voter in its issue of last
week. A fter declaring that one of the Multnomah repub
lican candidates was a bad man that should be defeated
and his democratic opponent was a good one, the Voter
admonished the republicans to elect the bad man any
how for fear they would not have enough sense to scratch
a ticket correctly and might vote against one or more
good republicans.

SCOUTS
(C onducted by N ational C ouncil o f t h o ]
S couts o f A m e r ic a . )
SEA SCOUTS TO BE FORMED
The sea scout brunch of the Boy
£ outs of America has been placed un
der the direction o f James A. Wilder.
The lure o f the sea is as strong to
the boy as the lure of ths wilds. For
the first time he Is to have a chance
to smell the tar and oakum and feel
the swaying deck beneath his feet,
even though he may live in a sandy
desert.
The chief sea scout has introduced
a new note Into scouting— the Idea of
giving every scout a definite Job with
definite duties. Under his system there
is no general rush for the axe and neg
lect of the shovel. Every scout does
his part o f the work und together they
do It all—whether it 1* launching a
boat or cooking a meal.
As In the navy, every scout in the
boat will have a specialty and a rating
based on that specialty. He will have
certain gear In his charge and will re
ceive special Instruction In the han
dling and the care of the same.
It Is not absolutely necessary that
there shall be water in or near a town
where the sea scouts are to be organ
ized, though not to have at least a
horse-pond will be a handicap. Jour
neys to navignble water must then be
undertaken or crew and skipper will
stick at the boat grude, and interesting
but dry-land class of work and games.
It will be permissible t i change a
room into a “ ship.” In this case the
stairways will become “ gangways,” the
windows “ports” and “ skylights,” and
everything will be kept shipshape.
Tlie United States navy department
bas been Interested In sea scouting for
» number of years, und some troops of
sea scouts have bad the use o f navy
equipment. Including bonts. Instruc
tion has been given in some cases by
Instructors from navy yards and navy
vessels.
