Professional baseball lias recently been brought into
ill repute. Certain members oi the Chicago \\ hue box
turned crook tor a lew thousand dollars. Promptly base
ball ohiciais met the issue without evasion. I he guilty
players were barren from baseball forever, tlio it cost the
owner oi the Vv lute ttox at least one hundred tliousaiiu
dollars. l*m public confidence is restored and while it
may expect crookedness at times in many of the other
leading sport», baseball will-be clean.
The example of the \\ lute »Sox crooks will be a warn
ing to ail other players who may be tempted to go wrong.
The eight guilty, ail stars earning big money, can never
play again and wherever they may go will be branded
with the mark oi Cam. 1 liey have not only lost a sum far
in excess of the amount they received for going wrong,
but have sacrificed their reputations and nation-wide
popularity as well.

Each day w e’re being importuned
To join athletic clubs
To keep us lithe so we will not
Be classed among the uubs.
W e’re urged to scale the mountain peaks

Well, we have seen these husky gents
That throng’ the grocery store;
They grab a leaded sugar cask
And heave it through the door,
Or lift the hind end of a truck
That weighs a half a ton;
They sling baled hay
Around all day
And think it’s only fun.
But all the Sandows we have seen
Have early paid the debt,
And on their graves neurotic folks
Lay thyme and mignonette;
The pale and spindling ones survive
And live their span of years,
But for the thewed
And brawny brood
W e ’re always shedding tears.
