DID YOU DREAM O F S T A T U E S ?
_____
HE modern scientific Investigators
of dream phenomena all deny,
of course, the prophetic quality of
dreams. Except in one regard. They
say that perhaps— and they emphasize
the "perhaps” — in the dream state some
incipient disease or «lisorder o f the
system may manifest Itself in dream
symbolism, which said incipient dis-
ease or functional disorder would not
tie manifest to the dreamer in his
waking state because as yet o f too
trifling a nature to exert an impres
sion upon the mind while occapied by
the world of relatives. That there
should he found in tills way people
who still cling to the idea of a super
natural origin o f dreams Is ascribed
by the scientists to the fact that their
attempted psychological explanations
have, so far, been too inadequate to
overcome tha accumulated supersti
tions o f the centuries. And when we
consider the vnst number of years thnt
man has Inhabited the earth and ttiat
civilization as we know It is but n
thing o f yesterday— as late ns 1740
a cow was criminally prosecuted In
n French court and a dug was exe
cuted for witchcraft in Salem In 1GH2—
when we consider tills, it is not sur
prising that ttiere linger In ns psychic
remnants of the days when our naked
ancestors shuddered at the Jugglery of
the Druid priests in the circle o f
Stonehenge.
T o the ancients dreams were serioua
matters, though ns early ns the time
of Julius Ceasar the wise had begun
to scoff at them, ns will be remem
bered In connection with the celebrated
dream of Caesar’s w ife Cnlphurnln.
On the night before Caesnr’s assassi
nation she dreamed thnt she saw tier
husband’s statue running with blood
from many wounds and the Romans
coming to bathe tlielr hands In the
purple stream. She begged Caesar not
to go to the senate that day, but lie
refused to stay away lest the sena
tors should laugh at him for being
afraid “ because Ills w ife had bad a
dream.”
Calphurnia’s dream was
probably born of her anxiety for tlie
safety o f her husband, but the mys
tics agree with her in regarding It nn
unfavorable omen to dream of a stnt-"
tie. They say, however, that If you
dream o f several statues, you will
shortly receive n valuable present
from an esteemed friend— a ease, ap
parently, o f safety in numbers.

Novel Use fo r Ice.
Tree of the New York Tenements.
An engineer has invented the follow
ing method for making hollow concrete
blocks. Hitherto It has been difficult
to make large cavities In concrete, but
it oan be done, the engineer points out
by embedding blocks o f Ice in the mass
o f concrete and introducing small out
lets for the escape of the water after
melting. This method also makes un
necessary the constant moistening usu
al in concrete work, as It is auto
m atically supplied by the melting ice.
The tree of the New York tenements
is the ailantus, palmlike in its youth,
brought originally from China for the
gardens of the rich. It grows in dis
couraging surroundings, is defiant of
smoke, does not even ask to be plant
ed; for, Topsylike, it ‘'Jest grows.” Cut
it down, and it comes up again. It is
said to hare no insect enemies. An
odd point in its appearance is that
every branch points up.— R. and E.
Shackleton in Century Magazine.
