Captain Grover Hinkle of Monmouth has arrived in
New York from France. He left America a corporal.
Miss Bessie Swope has been re-elected to her position
in the Woodburn schools and also receives an increase in
salary.
A number of small children are playing along the rail
road tracks which is about as dangerous a thing as chil
dren could do.
The French tank drew a large crowd and much atten
tion. It was so completely covered with kids that it wa&
difficult for most people to see it.
Carl Fenton, recenetly returned from overseas, is dan
gerously ill at his home in Dallas and it is reported that
he has but a small chance of recovery.
¡State Highway engineers are surveying south from a
point between Independence and Momnouth. Many are
wondering if the highway isn’t going-that way.
A good line of shows at the Isis next week. Attend as
many as you can. Thursday and Friday nights are extra

T. J. Fryer reports the first rose of the season and un
less other claimants for the honor come forward, he has
again won the championship; the second year in succes
sion.
Mr. and Mrs. G. L. O’Neil have been guests of Rev. and
Mrs. C. T. Cook. They live at Spokane but spent the win
ter at Aberdeen, Wash. Mr. O’Neil is a brother of Mrs.
Cook.
Aubrey Bascue, U. S. N., arrived tonight from the south
and will spend several days here on a furlough. While
navy life agrees with him, Aubrey likes to spend a vaca
tion now and then in the old home town.
Miss Gretclien Kreamer has been re-emplyyed as prin
cipal of an Ashland school at a substantial increase in sal
ary. She is very popular there and tho she had other at
tractive offers, they were reluctant to let her go.
