ing letters from the boys who left here

Miss Florence Burnett gave a "hen"
party on the evening of the Fourth. We
were told that no "prying men" would
be there but we saw one elegant young
swell escorting some of the invited
guests to the Burnett home. Guess he
must have been an "imitation rooster."
W. II. Kelly received a letter Wed
nesday from Tom Fennel), who is among
those who went to Cape Nome from
this county in May. Tom says to keep
away from Nome, it ig no good.
The city was deserted on the Fourth.
Everybody but a few small boys went
to Dallas and other points to celebrate.
The business houses were all closed and
it looked more like Sunday than a week
day.
Notwithstanding the reports of poor
crops and backward wheat, the farmers
of this section are investing rather
heavily in new harvesting machinery.
Up to date, this season, one machinery
firm here has sold three self-binders
and five mowing machines, while an
other dealer has cloned out thirteen
ales of mowers, six of them going in
one day. : u , '

The local lodges of the A. 0. U. W.

church will serve ice cream and cake in

National hank every Saturday afternoon

The annual meeting of the stock
holders of the Polk County Bank at
Monmouth, was held Saturday and a
dividend of eight per cent " was ordered,
thin makes over $12,000 returned to
stockholders in dividends since the
bank was organized, about ten years
ago. The old hoard of directors was re
elected, who. in turn, re-elected the old
officers' of the bank, viz. : J. if. Hawley
'president; P. L. Campbell, vice presi
dent; Ira C. Powell, cashier.
During last May an infant child of
neighbor Was suffering from cholera
Infantum. The doctors had given up
all hopes of recovery. I took a bottle

of Rgents of the Southern Oregon Nor
mal School Wednesday elected Pro
fessor T. A. Hayes to fill th vacant
hair of physiology and English, Pro
fessor Hayes was formerly principal of
Ashland public schools, and for the past
two years has been at the Stanford Uni
versity. Prof. Hayes also was principal
of the public schools of this city and
ell liked, giving general satisfaction.
The engines were hardly stopped Sun-
ay morning before Superintendent Gil-
more had them oit their loumiatlons
and out of the house in preparation for
the installing of the new machine. A
good deal of work was necessary before
the new engine could be placed; the
foundations had to be cut down, holes
rilled and an entire new arranginent of
the dynamos and machinery. But
patience and perseverance accomplishes
much and by Wednesday steam was
turned on the new engine. Everything
considered, the boys did remarkably
well in making the changes as quick as
they did.

A new post office rulo has just
gone into effect imposing a fine of
louO, or one year s imprisonment
on any ono who, through careless
ness or otherwise, takes mail not
belonging to them from the office
and fails to return it at once. This
applies to newspapers as well as
letters and other valuable mail.
People when taking their mail from
the office should examine it before
going out of the building; it will
take but a moment and will save a
deal of trouble. To say it was tho
postmaster's fault Will cut no figure
under this ruling.
Kansas City has a judge with a
wisdom like that of Solomon. He
recontly rendered a decision that
will intorobt young mon who take
their girls out riding. A young
man hired a team for that purpose,
telling the livoryman the fact, and
in course of the drive the team ran
away and demolished the buggy
The owner suod the young man for
damages and tho judgo 'gave the
verdict to the young man, saying
it was the duty of the liveryman,
knowing that he was going to take
girl out riding, to give him a
team that could be driven with ono
hand.
