IL, I.1 ... 1 llae 0 rover got lost la Uie tollee of Buuard bay, or la be still meditating over Uie result lu Main, lie ha not been heard from elnce Congreea aitjour- v Our economical governor waa trying to out down tle expenaea of the penl tentlary by making whohwale pardon, and because he waa criticised a little by the preaa, be ha got mad and aavs no more will be made publlo, except In hie report. ;' ' - ' ' - The democratic governor of New York la credited with the following: 'When I waa a boy," aaya Governor Flower, "ten mills used to make a ecu t; but for the past year, a hundred mllU haven't made a cent." Quite a dig for each a partisan to give but party. In addition to his generoua gift of money, Mr. Jamee J. Hill, of the 0 reat Northern, has set aside 6000 acre of land, In the state of Minnesota, to be as8i(rned to those made homeless by the recent forest fires, who may with to take up small forms and cultivate them. Here la the latest on Col Breckln ridge: At the conclusion of an Impas sioned address down in Kentucky the other day, Col W. C. P. Breckinridge announced that he waa weary, and that aa soon as his campaign was ended he would visit England. Whereupon the leader, of the band, who hnppeued to be an Englishman, struck up, "God Save the Queen." In New Zeland they have in success lul operation the taxation of land values, exclusive of Improvements and personal rroi)ertv. eraduated Income, taxes the 1 m v ownership of railroads, telegraphs, telephones and postal savings banks. government life Insurance, legal tender postal notes, a reformed dvll service, government labor bureaus and other advanced Ideas, which among us are considered the dream of the next century. ' While the democratic and republican managers are fighting for a majority of members in the next bouse, either would gladly let the other side have a majority, if thereby they could retain for their own party the control of a majority of the state delegations In the house. The house may not be called upon to elect the next president, but Aben again it may many think the indications noint that way. and if it Bhould the prize will belong to the party that can control the votes of twenty three states in the house, as Arizona and New Mexico will not probably get representation In congress early enough to be considered in this business; in fact, that was one of the reasons why the bills for their admission were not acted upon by the senate at the last session. So far as the vote for president Is concerned a majority of one is as good 'as the entire delegation, as each state only has one vote and that is cast by the majority. In the present house of congress at Washington the democrats control the delegations from 26 state, the republic cans from fourteen and the populists control three states and hold the balance of power in one, Nebraska. Now, the question that is bothering the politi cians is what changes will be made in the state delegations by the coming congressional elections. The elections that have been held have not thrown much light upon-the subject, for nobody really expected Alabama or Arkansas to go any other way than democratic, or Oregon, Vermont and Main to go any other way than republican. To control a majority of the state delega tions In the next house the republicans will have to hold the fourteen they now have and to add nine. The democrats cannot lose more than three of the states they now have dropped into the minor ity, and as the states they now control Includes New York, Illinois, phio, Wis consin, Wyoming, Ehode Island, Con necticut, Delaware and New Jersey the chances for losing are altogether too numerous to please members of tho iMtrtv. This is his last year at the Normal. Somoof our farmers have sold their wheat at 35 cents per bushel. Wheat has now gone down to 33 cents., . I. Ashenfcltcr lua raised his dwelling bouse alwve the high water mark and otherwise improv ed the the same. One hop man got mad because a man told him tho price of hops had advanced one cent. Farming must be in a deplorable condition in Oregon, when men that own good farms and some of them own near 1000 acres of good land, go out to pick hops and make 75 cents to fl a day. Everyone will have his own opinion of this matter as suite him let, but we ask which pays tho best to raise wheat that cost about 50 ceute per bushel to raise, and sell it at 32 cents a bushel, or go and pick hops at 40 and 50 cents a box and make from 75 cents to II a dayt Most of the farm products are iu the same ratio as wheat What has brought the noble calling of the farmer to this deploi-able condition!
