offices to which hey aspire. They are
also advocates of a governmental pol
icy that lasures the greatest good to the
greatest number ; for by laying all par
tlsan prejudice aside one must come to
tlie conclmion that the protection
principle as applied to and for our In
dastrlal interests is the principle and
policy that advances the prosierity of
all classes of people and keeps in active
operation our inlks and factories,
which under the threat of a free trade
policy has caused our factories to lan-
gulsh and caused our farming and all
business interests to suffer a depression
never before experienced. From 18(10
to 1882, a period of thirty two years,
the republican party had controlled
the nation's destiny, had formulated
Its policy and framed it laws and un
der tkt beneficent policy of protection
to American Industries and American
labor the country has enjoyed a period
of unprecedented prosperity and un
paralleled growth. The democratic
policy of free trade, if pursued, must
snake the difference between the rich
and the poor more marked, and at the
same time decrease the wages of the

way in the past. Loyalty to the ooun
try should be the first consideration.
Free trade under any guise the demo
cratic) party may call it will never

and sophistries of tin etponents of the
'tariff for revenue only' have had
their "tunings" and the laboring men,

and hereafter will be found sustaining

tic governmental attire.
Gownor Pennoyer is getting all the
roasting any man need want, and he
deserves It. Tlie increasing figures of
his Increasing fortune are shown up;
his insults to presidents ; accepting a
great deal more for gubernatorial ser
vices than any other governor of Ore
gon 5 running down railroad corpora
tions and the pass system, but riding
on free passes ; entrusting the iropor
tant duties of life office with his private
secretary, while he canvasses the state
in hope of a burlier office; praising
California and damning Oregon ; fight
ing trusts on the stump and being a
member of a big lumber combine;
shows him to be a man of the people,
stiat is of the people who by hard labor
contribute to Increase his princely
wealth and help to make hlrn one of
the monarchs of princely wealth.
It is, of. course, highly Improbable
that any" Intelligent democrat elected
to the legislature would be so false to
the Interests of the state, or so Indiffer
ent to the sentiment of the best ele
ment la his party, as to lend his coun
tenance or give his vote to the election
of a populist to the United States sen
ate. The people should bear in mind,
however, that democrats have done
just such things before and the risks
now involved are too great to Justify
any risks of that kind. The only safe
course la, to paraphrase a famous order
of the Immortal Washington at a cer
tain crisis in Continental affairs: "Put
none but republicans on guarM." !
