E. Bond has purchased a nice ly situated lot in the eastern part of town and will build a neat reai- - dence. Elder Barton Riggs and brother, Ralph, of Salem, were visiting rel ates and friends in this city last Sunday. Miss Laura Davidson of St, rani, is visiting her friendfs) in thiscitj daring the week; Chet is all smiles consequently. Clarence, the eldest son of Mr, and Mrs. Palmer, living south of town, arrived here last week ou a visit to his parents. Hatch and Mr. I. 8 ' Smith, republican nominee for rep , resentative, attended a meeting of ,.r the Falls City republican cluh last Saturday evening. Ira will be elected, and don't you forget it. The Y. M. C. A. met with the Y. W. C. A. last Sunday afternoon ; the ladies having an excellent pro gramme prepared, it being a re port of their delegates to the Btate convention held at Salem; the dele , gates report a profitable and pleas , 1 ant session. Elder J. N. Smith will hold reg nlar services in the Christian church here next Sunday morning and the Christian Endeavor Soci etywill occupy the evening hour with an especially prepared pro : gramme, which promises to be in structive. Everybody invited. It looks as if the democrats have nominated a lot of figure-heads for ' ' their state ticket, ; knowing they will not be in it at all at the June election, and therefore put np some fellows who would not bo hurt themselves or the party either when they did take the trip up Salt river. The joint session of the societies last Saturday evening was a very enjoyable affair; the programme was quite well rendered, and the numbers of special interest was the oration of Mr. Vining which contained many brilliant thoughts and was very ably delivered, and " the paper by Mr. Curtis was quite: humorous and the several sallies of wit were very appropriate. After -the literary exercises the young people spent a short time very pleasantly in social chatting. The annual session of the Young Peoples' Alliance of Oregon will be a field in this city at the Evangelical , church, commencing Monday and a continuing until Wednesday even Ing. The annual State Conference of the Evangelical church will com: mence next Thursday and last over Sunday. A large number of Evan gelical brethren from all over the state will be present at these meet- ( Ings and our people may expect to ' hear some eloquent discourses from the eminent ministers in attend ance. Everybody cordially invit ed to attend all services. Section foreman Seekler went to Portland Tuesday and came Iwck NeuutMHlay. Mm. Pierce Rlggs of Crowley, was visiting her parents E. Bed well and wife, last Sunday. The Chicago ladies' quartette w be at the Normal chapel tomorrow (Saturday) evening, and the sinir ing and recitations promise to be the boat our people will have the opportunity of hearing. Rufns Smith of this city, missed four lat hogs from the slaughter house near Talnmeo this week. I says last yer he lost eighteen head and has never since heard of them. Ho thinks the loss is not accideuta but that some person has profltet by the transaction. The publio school board met this week and selected the following teachers to teach during the schoo year of '94 and '05: Principal, F. Long; 1st assistant, L. L. Swaun 2ud assistant, A. J. Shipley; pr: nmry, Miss Mary Coata. Professor B. L. Murphy, who bus so faith fully and competently been prluci pal of the school for the past fonr or five years, has irono into the nursery business and will pursue that avooatlou in the future. There came very near beinc fire at Prof. B. L. Murphy's last Tuesday evening; his wife threw some rnbjbish in the fire which caused the chimney to burn out and some of the burning soot fell on the roof; Mrs. Murphy happened to go out in the yard pretty soon when she saw the roof was en fire, no one being present but herself she cluuwl upon the roof and put the Are out with a bucket of water; nolo about two feet in diame ter was burut iu the roof. A very good audience creettM President Oondit of the Albany col lege, at the formal chapel last Sun day afternoon. The exercises com nieueed with devotional reading and prayer by Rev. Dr. Townsem of Independence; followed with a quartette, "Consider, the LIlllos.' by Mrs. Spillnian, Miss Daisy West aim rrorwvsors Powell and Spill man. President Campbell with i few remarks on the inter-colletflate athletic sports and lectures of the representatives of the different in stitutions of learuinir. irvsente President Condi t who addressed the audience on the topic, "Kduca tion Makes Leaders." The lecture was very profitable to everyone, as showed very ' conclusively the superiorly of a well-educated per sou, also the very great advantages for acquiring an education durini these modern days. President Con dit is a genial and pleasant-appear ing gentleman, and our people are pleased to have met him.
