whether we had it or not, no mat
ter whether good or bad, would
mean prosperity. What ourpeo
pie really want now is work. Lew
money spent abroad; but mort
spent at home; A revival of the
wheels of industry and theu there
would be plenty of money.
THE Populist party comes before
the people of the United States say
ing the tariff is not an issue and a
a consequence ignores it. Just ah
long as that party ignores the tarifl
as an issue it must remain a third
party. The two leading parties are
before the people directly at issue
on the tariff and until that matter
is settled the question of govern
ment ownership of railroads, tele
phones and telegraphs will not
unite the people in its support;
neither will the people ignore the
tariff question on an issue of loan
ing money at two per cent to the
neoDle by iusuing more government
nromisefl to pay: neither can an
issne be made on alien ownership of
land, nor on the establishment of
postals savings banks. , These may
all be good in themselves but they
arc not the leadine issues. The
prohibition party makes temper
ance its leading issue. It too con-
