the stntely dignity ot the ancient
epics, the grandeur ot Milton, the flow

BREATHING BAD AIR
In a very short time, cool weather will .
be opon us, doors and windows will be
olosed tightly in dwellings, school-bo use
and publio buildings, and then comet tbe
time ot inhaling bad air. An ordinary
candle form eight hundred cubic inches
of carbonic acid gas in an bonr; an aver.
age-sued man does tbe same in half an
bonr. One man in a room twelve feet
long, broad, and high, into which no treab
air i admitted, would oon vert the whole
atmosphere into oarbouie aoid gas ta
twelve hour. The only reason why
thousands ot person wbo go to bed -in
good health in a small room are not -dead
before morning, is, because some -air
force itself into the room, at the
cracks ot door and window.
When a person enters a room, where
other bave been vitiating the air tor
sometime, he feel an oppressiveness,
tho air is close that is, it has bnt little
oxygen. Those whose longs are weak
feel it most. - Bat whether felt or not '
inhaling bad air, air whioh has been ..
partly converted into carbonic acid gas,
injures health and destroys life gradually.
Unless the poison-laden atmosphere ot
the sleeping-room, school-room, eta, to
diluted or removed by a constant our-
rent of fresh air, the blood becomes im
pure, tbe circulation sluggish, frightful
dreams at night, and fearful headaches
in day time, are the result
Ventilation, light, dryness, are indis
pensable requisite for all plaoe where
we breathe. Avoid eating meal in rooms
where tbe air is vitiated. The lungs and
clothing are so impregnated with fetid
air, that every child should take a walk
or a run in the open air for ten minute
before eating tbe noonday lunoh in the
school room, and while they are out, the '
door end windows should , be thrown
open, i bis should be done alto at in

THE FIVE MILLIONS.

Kntztowu Normal, at the Berks oonnty
institute, that the five-million-dollar Ap
propriation recently made by the legis
lature of Pennsylvania, if represented iu
silver, eaoh dollar weighing an ounce,
would require flfty-eix two-horse tesms s
to bnnl it If piled np in shape ot a pyr
amid, ten feet square at its base, the apes
thereot would rise to tbe height ot two
hundred and fifty feet There is no other
slate on the face ot the earth which
makes such magnificent appropriations

SCHOOL LIBRARIES. .
Every school-room should hnvei book
onse for the reception and keeping ot li-
brary books, Good books, suolt ss young
people will delight in rending, ana from
the reading ot which they will beueOted,
should be oollected from time to' time
and placed in this library. I'nmUB them
selves will thus be enabled to read good
books. Good literature will find its way
into rural households. Wbo will make,
