wheat crop of the three states
would fill a train 230 miles long.
This is the manner in which the
national funds of France are kept
secure from thieves: Every day
when the money is placed in the
vaults in the cellar, a lot of masons
ure on hand and wall up the doors
with hydraulic mortar. Water i
then turned on and kept running
until the cellar is flooded. Thus a
burglar would have to provide him
self w ith a diving suit and break
down a temeut wall before he conld
liegin work on the vaults. Wheu
the officers arrive in the morning
the water is drawn off, the ma
sonry, broken down and ine
vaults opened. It is difficult
to imagine how the most expert
burglar would penetrate all these
defenses, and certainly the treas
ure of the bank of France are bet
tor guarded than any in the world

last time it has been placed on ex
hibition since 1844. .Whatever
opinion men may form as to the
genuineness of the relic it is a well '
established fact that Augustas was
particularly proud of Treves. No
place in Germany is so rich in the
remain of the Roman period and
it is beyond question that Augustus
sent many of his soldiers there.

of a salaried secretary who is to
keep his office in the city of Port
land, which is to be headquarters
for the newspaper men of the state.
The secretary is expected to act a
a general newsgather and keep the
office well filled at all times with
such matters as will be useful and
Interesting to newspaper men.
The plan in an excellent one, and
if given a fair trial is bound to
succeed. The press of Oregon is a
credit to the state, and it ought to
have a headquarters in the leading
city of the state. With the right
man for secretary it will do more to
enhance the dignity of the state
press and increase its general use
fulness than anything that has yet

Benjamin Windsor's place in
Polk county, about a mile below
Lincoln, was the scene of a fatal ac
cident this morning.' Johnny, his
17-year-old sou, was hauling oats
aud the wagon ran over a stump,
throwing the young man out. The
wheels passed over his body at his
waist, but he did, not think he was
hurt He got on his wagon and
rode to the house, but was taken
sick soon after. He died, after
suffering great pain for two hours,
having sustained internal iniuries.
The Montana Supreme Court
recently decided that the editor of
the Helena Joiinwii was not in con
tempt for refusing to reveal to a
judge of Butte the source of infor
mation for an article which reflect
ed on the alleged partiality of the
judge in a recent will case. The
editor who had been committed to
jail by the judge criticised was re
leased, and costs wore assessed
against the judge.
