The great work, then, that the college do for the farmei in to to train the faculties that the) may work togetier conjointly, and enable him, with the mind, the eye, aud the hand, to study aud apply the true principle of cultivation. Whether this i done at one of the great universities or at an agricul tund college, tbe end to be accom pli- bed is tbe same. Of courefc, at the bitter the work bears wore closely upon the line that the farmer w to follow in after life, and so is the more immediately avail able; but tbe graduate of Yale or Harvard is not the hi (jualifivl for the farm because of bis knowl edge of the claries and science gained at tin institutions. In the various agricultural aud scien tific schools of the United States are now more than ten thousand stu dent. All of these are not fitting themselves for the occupation of agriculture, or even taking the ag ricultural courses, but euongb of them are doing it so that a large and constantly increasing leaven of enlightenment is emanating from the schools to the farm. W. IT. Cr'ine, in JJppincotCi Magazine Jut March, trxriiHXEM. We have always said and thought that Independence bad as liberal aud whole-souled business men as any town in Oregon. It is true those men who show the most en terprise are not always the largest proiKirty owners; but still, with prosperity attending them, are liable to always remain here. There is hardly a move for the good of the town but what they willingly assmt It sounds well to the out side world to know of such things. The question is, does it payt It is not charity. We are supposed to be gainers. We areacting entirely on selfish motives. We seek gain for ourselves. The questiou arises, '"Do we receive our mouey back again?" Eight years ago the riier chants donated several hundred dollars to establish the West Side. Did it pay! Beveral hundred dol lars were donated towards a fire protection and water woiks. Did it pay! (Several hundred dollars were donated towards placing scenery in the new opera houw. Did it payt A bonus of several hundred dollars was paid to bave Mr. Jones establish a ferry, Did it payt The board of trade paid out several hundred dollars in ad vertisingthe town. Did it payt The citizens donated several hun dred dollars to Mr. Geo. Skinner for a flouring mill. Did it payt Kucb questions are allbased upon selfishness. If what has bcn done has returned the money paid out, it has been a good investment, but if not, then your money, you will say, was wasted. Thequestion is, could we have had a nepspaper, water works, ferry, opera house, flouring mill, etc., without helping the en terprises! Now then can we get a railroad to Falls City, a cannery, or a hotel bere this summer by limply wkb- ! tog tor themi u w are ludtOnfeol at oot capita tcu Apt to be Indiffer ent.
