Hclbriners are extremists always, but reforms must come in our gov eminent and from no class of peo pie do they come more directly for the common good than from the farmer. The organization of Farmers' Alliances means a reso lution in many ways. The ridl cule heaped upou those who hold ideas at variance with those com monly accepted dot not prove the ideas to le without value. It has lieeu said that a people cannot govern themselves and that a ceu tral (tower is the only protMT one for true freedom. The .organiza tion among the farmers is to prove that at least they know by whom the government should be conduct ed, and while certain classes will seek to place obstacles in the way of the accomplishment of their desires the spirit of iudepeudence still burns too freely to be dis couraged easily. Iteforms are needed, and reforms must come. Let the false ideas of political par ties be exploded, and let the laws be made for the lioue and sinew of our people, instead of tho sjsjcula tor and politician. We are the people, and our demands must 1 obeyed. Even though both repub lican and democratic parties go to the wall, principles founded on justice and right will pievail. The fanners' alliance is not partisan, it is not working for its own advanc ment into power, but simply that its ideas of government to benefit the people may be tried. It is a party of principles. POSTAL TKI.KORAI'II. Postmaster General Wanamaker hits issued a pamphlet giving in detail bis plan for establishing a telegraph system on the same basi as the present postal service. lie recites the demand which is expressed through tho boards of trade and other organizations for a postal telegraph, lie points out the dangers arising from allowing the government to own the tele graph lines, and his plan is to lease present lines and do government business over them, and allow the company to do as much more as they. wish. The paymeut for mes sages is to be by stamps on tho en velope the same as now, and the charges to commence will be from 15 to 50 cents for twenty words and two cents per word for all in ex cess ot twenty. Jn order that it may cost the govern ment nothing to try the experiment ho proposes mat it bo limited in its operation to cities having free, deliveries only, and later it can be extended. Mr. Wanamaker has struck a good idea and wo hope to see his plans put in operation. The present charges are altogether too high. A writer for the Voice has made a curious calculation one of the possible effects of the bill author izing the government to loan money on land to tho amount of half its value at 2 per cent, interest. He tikes A si or, of New York, as an example of what a largo land o.t ner eoiiiil do under the opera lions of Hu- Mil. Estimating bis real estates at 100,000,000 Astor could borrow from tho government oil it 150,000,000 at "J per cent . Investing this sum iu laud he could then borrow .15,000,000 uud upou the land purchased with that sum ho could get 12,000,000, continu ing in this way until lis loau from thi government would lieonly tV2, 250. Mr. Astor would then have iuveNtcd Iu land lli,W7,?2. If he received from bis tenants rents amounting to six per cent., this would give him mi Income of II l,KM,2iW. Out of this he would (my the 'i per cent, intercut to the 'government, amounting to l.WK,- 710, leaving him a clear income of pretty near 10,000,000, Instead of the ti,000,000 which hu now hits. He would thus make 11,000,000 annually, by the plau which the firmer' alliance, has promised for the purpose of putting nn end to the money moiioxly. This is ol course, a fancy sketch, but is not with out jtlguillcation. A prluterdou'tgo to the doctor every time lie is out of "sorts;', nor to the baker every time he Is out of "pi;" nor to bell every time he wants to see the "devil;" nor to the wood pile every time he wants a "stick;" nor to the Bible every time he want a good "rule;" uor to the gun shop every time he wants a ''shooting stick;" nor to the cabiuet shop every time he wants "furniture;,' nor to the Istuk when he wants "quoins;" uor to the lawyer when be has a dirty "ease;" uor to the butcher when he wants "phut ;" nor to the old cheese when ho wants"live matter;" nor to the grave-yard when he wants "dead-matter;" nor dm be go fox huutiug when he wants a "chase." Let the government lease the use of our telcuroph lines and carry out the idea of letting the post office have a naUl telegraph. It the same system apply iu deul ing wilh our railroads. Ix-t the government agree to pay ho much for the public use of our railroads. Let the imal office drjmittiieiil handle the money and all person traveling can either buy of the (swt office department or the railroad company. The cost of a ticket any where on the Pacific coast we will say would then be only aliout J 50; to Mississippi river aliout 5 and N'ew York 7.M. The ultimate government of the railroads and telegraph lines will be on that plan. A twenty dollar gold piece con tains twenty dollars of gold, and the alloy throwu in.
