la the death of Dr. J. K. ItavM
son, Tolk county h lont ou of its
most eubstantlM cttUcnn, nml so
ciety worthy member of high
moral tAaraetur ami excoptioiml
mental vigor. Tho doctor cmi
grtd to thUoountry in 1847 when
only a youth in age mi worldly
expcrltuu, but ho wiw wulowod
with vigorous physical count i
tution ami that necuiiitr virility of
mind which always force IMC
Into prominence. Tho schools hud
done little in the way of giving
polish to his mental equipment,
but in the great university of the
world he was an active student and
close observer of the every day
(fairs of men.
Early in life he conceived the
ide of making tho practice of
medicine ft profession, but fuuud
many obstacles besetting the path
way of hi cherished ambition.
Havlug located lu a new and
sparsely settled country,' without
influential Mends, and destitute of
the mental discipline which comes
from professional routine study, he
found himself heavily handicapped
at the very threshold of his career.
Under similar circumstances most
of men would have given up the
idea of fittiiiff themselves for a
learned profe&iou, but not so with
this modest and unostentatious
youth. The many obstacle that
beset hi path only stimulated his
enerav and lent a charm to the
ultimate triumph which his dar
intt intellect so clearly foresaw. He
purchased ft few staudard medical
work and begun the study of med i
cine. This mau of iron will and
Invincible energy would till his
farm during the day, and, then, by
the light of his log cabin tire study
his books during the long winter
evenings, uutil at last ettiipXHl
with the learning that "the explor
ing mind briugs from the caves of
knowledge" he entered upon the
practice of medicine ns a profession.
The pioneer community hud confi
dence iu the young physiciuu's
medical ability, for they were fa
miliar with his studious huhiU, and
recognized his sterling moral and
intellectual qualities. Ilis sub
sequent professional career is a jmrt
of the history of Tolk county, and
he succeeded in building up for
himself the noblest monument auy
man can have the confidence and
esteem of his fellow men. Ilis
word was his bond, nud profession
ally he was honest and faithful in
the treatmeutof the afflicted under
hi care. Dr. Davidson wits a self
made man one of Nature's uoble
men. He lived a worthy and use
ful life, and the world is better for
his having lived. No man can sue
cessfully allege aught against his
good name. He has left tho indel
ible impress of his vigorous uud
practical mind upon the cominuui
ty of which he was so conspicuous
a member. A noble soul h;w sunk
into that sleep called death as peace
fully as "he who wraps the drapery
of his conch about him and lies
down to pleasant dreams.''
Senator C. B. Farwell, of llli
noise, has succeeded in securing a
congressional appropriation of
'2000 for experimenting in the arti
ficial production of rains. It is
proposed to explode dynamite in
the air, and it is supposed that the
aerial cencussions occasioned by
rapid and powerful explosions will
effect the necessary atmospheric
conditions to produce rain. The
theory is decidedly problematical.
The ablest scientific authorities are
quit skeptical in regard to the
probability of producing rain by
artificial means. Prof. KuhhuII of
the Royal Society of Jiew South
Wales, states the question very
clearly. He says:
"It would eem nnreiuwnitble to linik
(or the economical prod notion of rain
under ordinary oircumatancea, and our
only ohance would be to take advantage
of time when the atmosphere ia iu the
condition called nnatable equilibrium, or
wbea cold ourrent overlie warm one.
If uader theae condition) we could act
the warm current moving upward, and
one flowing Into the oold one, conaid
erable quantity of ram might fall, but tins
favorable condition aeldom eziata iu na
ture.' The latest sensation in the ex
ploration world is an aerial voyage
to tho north pole in a balloon. Two
adventurous young Furiniui),s, an
aeronaat and an astronomer
Messrs. Besaccon and Hermite
are going to attempt the hazardous
voyage. The explorers will sail
from France in two steamships in
the latter part of May, so as to ar
rive in Spitsbergen in July, aud
then soon as the favorable south
winds set in they will depart on
their aerial journey for the north
pole. It is almost safe to predict
they will fail to reach the point
where the earth spins upon its axis,
The two young scientist and there
three assistant? will probably never
return from their sail over the ice
fields of the north polar sea.
