J J SIKVATIOX. The iKtpulur concqitlou of mo tion nutans curtulu course of men tal training in thr jmblio wluxil or academy, but thin evidently 1 a very limited view of the u!jjtct. The curriculum of the schools does not include all there la of education, indeed, it in only a small jwrt of it, comparatively speaking. , A mere knowledge of books, while inipor- taut, is not tho sin qua mm o.gvn uiue learning. Primarily the ob ject of a college course is to disci Uli no the mind, to trulu it to neeu rate and logical methods of reason ing; and, gecomlarily, it is to sup ply the individual with the funda mental principle of clawided knowledge, no that its possessor may uot have to wait, as Huxley wva, for "nature's admouitory W on the ear." Thus equipped any person is better qualified to snww fully grapple with the affairs of life, all other conditions being equal than he who is destitute of these ac complishtuenta. But after all the great university of learning Is the world, active con tact and association with our fellow men. The results of thousands of venerations of observation and study are condensed in languages, govern meuks, religions, literatures, and the intuitions of the race; and it is only by coming in contact with these forces as exemplified in the active duties of life, the common place affairs as well as the loilinr and more ambitious achievements of men that the individual becomes truly and genuinely educated, And while it is true that a mind may be artificially cultured beyond its normal capacity, and at the cost of its intellectual virility, yet, as a rule, education is beneficial, and therefore essential to the well-being of society. Thinking people in all ages of the world have reeoguiied the necessity of tueutal discipline and culture. Ferlclea, the great Athenian orator and scholar, w ho, in speaking of the people of Athens, says: "We at Athens are lovers of the beautiful, yet simple in our tastes; .we cultivate the mind with out loss of manliness." lint it is well for us to remember that he is here describing the aristocrat io and cultivated classes of the Athenian commonwealth, the great mass of common people were in Ignorance, The modern world has passed far beyond anything aneieut times ever attained in the way of solid and use ful knowledge. The world of to day is one of varied and multiplied interests and accomplishments. The high water mark of average in telligence is greater now than ever before, and it is the result, or large ly so, of our modern educational system. And in direct ratio with the increase of knowledge comes a recognition of its liencfits aud con sequent ' necessity. Education, which includes contact with the world, with man aud his relations, broadens and develops the miud, increases our appreciation of the beautiful and the true, of the noble and the good, makes life worth liv ing and mankind the noblest haud iwork of Oml. A GREAT bJSCOVEHY. Perhaps not since Jeuner's time has a more important medical discov ery been made than Dr. Koch's cure for tuberculous diseases. The remedy is being thoroughly tested in lier lin by the ablest specialists of Eu rope, and there is very little quest ion among scientific men as to the . great merits of the discovery. Consumption has hitherto been considered an incurable disease, but the conqueror of the ell scourge has, at last appeared in tlie person of the eminent German physician and pathologist. Hundreds of pa tients are daily applying for treat ment, and in all cases, except the most virulent, relief is remarkably speedy, and a permanent cure is only a question of time and proper treatment. The ingredients of the lymph, with which the diseased or gan is inoculated, have not been given to the public as yet, and the secret is only known to a few of I)r Koch's most intimate associates. The "regulars" of the old school of medicine are disposed to look askance at the new remedy, and many of them claim that it simply reaches the effect and not the cause of the disease. That is to say, the medicinal properties of the lymph destroy the lung infesting microbes, but not the disease per se, and, therefore, the relief obtained can be only temporary. Be this as it may, Dr. Koch certainly has achieved a great victory for the hu man race in its fight against dis ease, and his discovery will rank Jn history as the peer of Jen tier's discovery of vaccination. And, if urcmistakc not, Dr. Koch is also the discoverer of the cholera germ and its remedy. His investigations in tins special field of research have materially enlarged, the realm of medical knowledge, and bestowed an inestimable boon upon mankind. than an abnormal condition, but it is nevertheless true that the social order is at times very corrupt, aud the heroic self sacrificing work ( the geuuiun reformer is an absolute necessity to the moral, religious and intellectual growth of tho world. No great reformer ever appeared who was uot at first denounced as "quack'' or charlatan by the un thinking multitude, ltut this is not saying that every person with a diseased imagination who cries out "reform' is a reformer. There are reformers and reformer. The common sense of mankind always manages to separate the dross from the gold. The threatened Indian outbreak in North Dakota is daily becoming more serious. W, V. Cody ( Hu ffulo Kill), who has recently been among the Indians, is of the opinion that war is imminent and nothing but the approach of whiter will avert the calamity. Gen. Miles considers the situation critical, and says "the causes of the dillleulty are easy of location insufficient food supplies, religious delusions, and tho innate disiMwitiou of the savage to go to war, must be held nwpoiwiblo," The General is concentratingtroops in the immediate vicinity of the threatened outbreak, autt every precaution is being taken to over awe the red blood-hounds, and for the protection of -settlers. Sitting Hull, the great Sioux chief, is a leading spirit among the dusky malcontents. We call attention, to an intelli gent and discriminating article in this paicr on the all prevailing evil for it certainly is an evil of swearing. Aside from its purely re ligious bearing, swearing Is, also, equally objectionable from a moral standpoint. We do uot care to en. ter into a discussion of the subject at the preseut time, for our corres pondent treats the question in a very interesting manner. W. 11. Brooks, Esq., of the Mon mouth Ik'mtieml, haudltwtheedito rial reins with the ease aud grace of an old stager. The first issue of that paper under its new manage ment has just come to band, aud presents a very readable appear ance.
