Teacher's Institute,
The teacher' itiHlitiite, which convened
st this plac on Inst Saturday, was a very
pleasant and profitable meeting. The
ontside attendance was large, besides
there were present some twenty-five or
thirty teacher.
The forenooD tension began by 8upt
Reynolds calling tbe meeting to order,
and Prof. Simonton, ot Dulles, was
chosen a secretary.
Tbe opening address consisted ot a
very interesting paper on "Shirking," by
Prof. W. L. McAdnms. Home general
remarks followed the rending of the ad
dress. "Exercis In Short Methods ot Inter
est," by Supt. Reynolds developed con
siderable thought and discussion. The
teacher generally became interested and
tbe running talk was lively for awhile,
The "Class Drill," by Mis Carrie
Fowle ot this oity, wa very systematic
ally and efficiently executed.
Tbe afternoon exercises opened with a
general discussion on "The Methods of
Arithmetic."
Tbe next in order was a song by Mrs
Tuck's juvenile class. Tbe little ones
did qnite well and their performance was
dnly appreciated by every one present.
Prof P. L. Campbell delivered a few
interesting remarks on "The Art of Ques
tioning and Receiving Answers."
Tbe closing address was a paper by
Prof. Veasey on tbe "Ik-bring Sea Con
troversy." Tbe speaker took the posi
tion that American interests are in jeop
ardy in those waters. Prof. Reynolds
wanted to know "What are we going to
do about it?" In tbe opinion of the
speaker this was a question for diplo
macy and statesmanship to settle.
It was moved tbat tbe next meeting be
held at Monmouth, Deo. 20th.
H. Hiracbberg, president of the Inde
pendence National bauk, who has been
absent in Europe for several months, re
turned home last Saturday. "Joe" is
looking quite well, and enjoyed tbe visit
to his fatherland splendidly. Of course
there wa a big handshaking wben be
stepped from tbe tram onto the depot
platform. . ' '

number of subscribers obtaiuod by auy one person might not be over
Un, hence in that case the ten subscribers will earn the first and a less
number each of the ot hers. This is just the work for the boys and girls.
A full subscription (2.00) coutits one. Half a year ($1.00) counts one '
half. Three months, or 50 cents, one-fourth. You can send in the
money and names each week until Nov. 22, 18!H), and at that time the
winners of the prizes will be announced through the columns of the
West Side. The West Side will be sent to Now Subscribers from date
