    AW, FOR A CAX.SLKRW
A coi-rwpondcnt iu last week'
West SIdk culled attention to fruit
culture iu this country. Now, this
is an important and practical que-
tiou, one iu which tho people of
Oregou should tnke a grout deal
Of intvrwt This country nlTonls
splendid fitoilitiivi for fruit cultuixs
aud there is no reason why it could
not be made a profitable business,
Apples, pours, plums, prune, eher
rics. indeed almost every vai loty of
deciduous fruits do well in this soil
and climate. ith a littlo extra
iudustry hundreds of old moss eov
ered orchards could be made to
yield a rich harvest of fruit, Expo
riuiont has proved that this can be
done, and where old 'orchards can
not le reclaimed, now orchards
ahould be planted. A I mast every
former of tho Willamette annually
raises from three to eight hundred
bushels of fruit, evcu under the
present system of cultivation, Estab
lisn a market Dy erecting canneries
and the supply will quadruple with
iu a few years. Independence is iu
need of an industry of this kind
It would pay whonjouce established
First, because there is a large
amount of fruit tributary to thi:
market; second, bemuse of tho flue
shipping facilities at this point
third, because we have a wide a
wake, pushing community that huv
the pluck to keep abreast with the
spirit or progress. A .cannery is
needed here, nud let us make '
hard pull, a long pull, ami a pull
altogether' to have one.
Politicians sometimes utter great
truths iu the midst of the most putt
isan speeches. For instance,
Speaker Keed in an uddsess to th
Republican League of Pennsylvania
the other day at Philadelphia said
"But friends, the greatest thing
this world is the people. They
make and unmake parties ; the
create history; they govern and
move, and the people of tho United
States are alone responsible for this
government, and it is their business
to know and act up to the resign
nihility". It would be well if this
little paragraph were printed iu
plain letters and pasted in the hat
of every voter in the United States.
There are entirely too many men
who seemingly forget that this is
goverunieut "of tho people, by the
people, and for the people," and
they should bo occasionally re
minded of it.
Probably never in the history
of the State of Oregon has so severe
a test come before a Legislature as
will come before the one which
meets next January. It is a test of
the public spiritedness of our Kep
resentatives: Shall Oregon stand in
the ruts of tweuty years agot Shall
Oregon be credibly represented at
the World's Fair of 1893! Shall
Oregon have an assessment law for
the industrious, saving, or shall it
be for the profligate, non-saving
class! Debt should be discouraged
not encouraged. Shall Oregon have
the masses of the people instructed
in all the laws enacted by our Legis
lature! Oregon might exist without
any law. Oregon will progress with
ur present law, but if we are to
materially progress we must keep
up with the times.
CI KBKNT TOPICS.
Stump speakers are fond of cul
ling the United States the most ier,
feet example of a govermeut by the
. people in existence, and yet, we
are raqidly adopting a system of
voting (the keystone of popular
goverment), which was originated
in far way Australian dependency
ofmonarchial Great Britain. All
of which shows that nut ions as well
as individuals may becomo the
deluded victims of self conceit.
John Bull should take warning
from the results of the tests recently
made by Uncle Sam of the relative
strength of the several kinds of
metal plates used by armoured
lighting vessels. It has been con
clusively shown that our guns could,
without the slightest difficulty,
break up every ironclad in the
British navy, as at present con
structcd.
A member of the Brooklyn, New
York, board of education has made
the wonderful discovery that one
of Longfellow's poems, ' 'Buildi ng of
a Ship," is unfit to be read by the
young. That fellow will bear
close watching. The idea that a
man who lived as pure a life as
Longfellow did could write any
thing immoral is simply ridiculous,
Should the pugilists and song-
and-dance men on the republican
side of tho house of representatives
form a combination with tho dem
ocratic high-kickers and make an
exhibition tour of the eountry it is
safe to predict an unpreccdentedly
large business for the show.
If it took New York iive years
to adopt a design the ugliest ever
seen for the Grant Monument,
how long will it take to build the
monument! Send answer to the
monument committee.
It is gratifying to learn that all
danger of a financial panic is over,
and that monev is easy in New

that however easy money may be In
New York, it continues to 1ms just
as hard to negotiate a small loan In
Iu this vicinity as it used to be.
Will some able financier kindly
explain this! - . ;'
The two weeks dead-lock iu the
house of repivsentativ Is another
argument In favor of having con
tested election cased decided by

"To Congress t Uivo us one
