which to shout ourselves hoarse;
in the election of Simpson as county
commissioner for the taxpayers of
Tolk county are the ones as much
interested as we, and all feel that
the result is just aud right
Election is over and yet work
will not stop on the motor line nor
any other enterprise now under
way in this city ; on the contrary
more important ones are being
planned and will be curried into
execution. No fulse promises will
be made, but the progress will be
no less sura.
Now that the election is over
what shall we talk about t Our
advice for one thing is, do not talk
at all but just sit down aud write
to some friend about the future
possibilities of Polk county aud try
and bring him here. Do not try
and think of some one away off in
Europe, or even the Eastern States,
but some one right in Oregon. You
will have more influence.

closed and has advocated
honest methods, and what it
believed to be right and proper.
This is not a victory upon which
Independence can congratulate it
self aloue, but all of Polk county
is the gainer. Calm judgement of
the matter will convince all of the
justice of your position now that it
is all over.
Mr. Simpson is elected commis
sioner of Polk conuty. While in
dividually Dallas would have been
benefited by Mr. McBee's election,
all of Polk county will be benefited
by Mr. Simpson's election. The
money for the bridges will be paid
without depreciating our credit
These are burdens which we cheer
fully bear. Polk county has grown
and will now grow faster than ever.
A time will come when a court
house can be built and not burden
the taxpayers. We should prepare
for that day in advance.
Sylvester Pennoyer has been
elected Governor of Oregon. One
of the most significant facts about
his election is that he was elected
in a republican state, which gives
Linger Hermann probably 10,000
majority, by from 3000 to 4000 and
also while being opposed by that
mighty paper, the Oregonian. Mr.
Pennoyer is the people's friend, if
any one can be, and as such he was
elected. If he proves untrue to his
professions, his future is not so
bright as his present He will
now be a prominent candidate for
vice presideut of the United State

our recent election. We stated
the issne squarely before the peo
pie; we told them time and again
it was court house or no cour

day by an overwhelming majority
and we still say, once for all, the
issne was plainly on the court
house question, and leave the
Dallas press to explain to its friends
the way it put the issue in the face
of their defeat Yes, we hail the
coming prosperity of Polk county
with joy. We are proud of our
' record because we have been vindi
cated. And now to one and all we
say, we have nothing to take back
We felt that we were right before
the election and we are right after
the election. We will in the future
devote the columns of the West
Side to the upbuilding of the
whole county and not to any pet
scheme of a few ringsters wherever
they may reside.

only have we that to congratulate

look every man in Polk county
squarely in the face and say that it
was gained fairly, honestly, and for

that Mr. Simpson's majority was
not obtained by illegal ballots,

most and a solid vote was cast
