BIG TIME PLANNED
FOR PORTOLA FETE
Bunting Enough to Encircle Earth
Will Be Used In San
Francisco
All of the famous street decora
tions mid illuminations of the pa si
for which San Francisco has been
notable are to be eclipsed durinp
Portola week, October 19 to 23. It
is expected lhat the displays in mag
nitude and mnpnificence will surpass
anything before attempted in the
I'nited States.
More than 1000 incandescent
electric lamps with n total of nearly
2.000.000 candlepower. will be used
in the illuminations. To supply the
current will necessitate 4000 horse
power and the capacities of all the
power plants surrounding San Fran-
. cisco will be taxed by the extra load
during Portola week. The only limit
of the plans for the illuminations
: was the capacity of the power
plants.
A trainlond of 50 big freight cars,
each one loaded to its capacity,
would be necessary to transport the
flags and penitents that will beused
in the Portola decorations. The
bunting that will be used to drape
the buildings and arches would form
a girdle one foot wide around the
earth at the equator.
Courts of honor, colonnades, and
big displays, hung high in the air will
form the principal features of the
decorations and illuminations, ami
will extend over three miles of street.
At the foot of Market street. In
front of the Ferry Building, will be
erected a. colonnade of Spanish
architecture, consisting of 20 col
umns, each 2S feet high. The col
nmns will be three and one-half feet
square at the top. The cornices will
be decorated with gg and dart
mouldings. On each side of the col
umns will be placed the letter "P,"
made of stucco and five feet in
will float between each column and
on the pinnacles will be placed four
five-foot carnival fags and, a six-
foot flag of the United States. The
entire colonnade will be snow white.

GATES SAYS PEOPLE IN
WEST ARE GROWING RICH
NT.W YORK. Sept. :Ui.- "The west
evu people and the western banker,"
declares John W. Ciates on his return
from an extended trip through the
great wheat and corn region, "have
more money than ever before in their
history, and there will he no extra
ordinary withdrwals of funds from
the east for crop-moving purposes.
International monetary conditions are
such that if money rates are ad
vanced materially on this side, mil
lions of dollars in gold will he export
ed from F.urope. The fact of the
west's complete financial independ
ence or practically that is one of
the most impressive and significant
in onr recent business history. It was
only 13 years or so ago that cash
was the scarcest of all commodities
in the agricultural states of the west,
when the interest payments on farm
mortgages held in the east were a
draiu on the westerner's resources
amounting to many millions of dol
lars yearly, when corn was being
burned, for fuel, when the popular
cry out there was for 'free silver'
and the extermination of the 'pluto
crats,' when pessimism wns on every
tongue and breathed from every line
of newspaper type and when William
Allen White was one day moved to
tell nn interested world just what
was 'the matter with Kansas.' Xow
nil that has changed. The 'wava of
prosperity' following the Spanish
American war struck the west prompt
ly. and struck it hard and the west
wouldn't let it recede.
