Apple Crop of Northwest Is Superior
in Quality to That of
Last.
SPOKANE, Wash.. Sopt. 2- Su
periiir in quality, though materiiilly
redncei in quantity, is the apple prop
e Washington and Oregon, actionliuj!
to Ren H. Rife, secrolavy-manar
the national apple show, who has
just returned from an extensive tour
of the large commercial orchards in
the two states. He said:
"Witwithstanding the fact that the
crop is reduced in almost every one
of the large districts in Washington
and Oregou, the growers realize what
it means to have their best fruit at
the coming exposition, and that alone
assures its success from the start.
"So far as I have been able to
learn, the districts reporting curtail
ment in their better varieties are:
Wenatchee, North Yakima, Cashmere.
Ellensburg, Chelan, Hood River,
Waitsbnrg. Dayton, Walla Walla.
Missoula, Lewiston and points in
British Columbia. These districts
produced bountiful crops the sea
son of 1908.
Overbearing Last Year.
"Most of the growers I met on my
trip contend that the apparent short -age
this season is due to over-bearing
last year, and this appears to be
borne out by the fact that younger
trees which had onl ya small crop
last year are fairly well loaded this
season, while in nearly every instance
the older trees, which were heavily
loaded last year, are now making
only a half crop.
"Such varieties as Winesaps. Jon
athans, Spitzenbergs, Yellow New
towns and other high scoring apples
are of splendid size and they are
taking an excellent color, and the
growers who are able to compete in
the carload class will, I believe, bring
exhibits to Spokane that will equal
anything yet seen.
High Prices Prevail.
"I found, too, that high prices
prevail in all districts and that
growers are slow to make contracts,
fully realizing that with a short crop
the. prices must advance because of
the unusually heavy demand for high
grade fruit. Buyers are numerous
and there is keen competition for
the outputs of the large orchards.
"Unfortunately the adoption of the
rules of the American Pomological
society by the National Apple Show.
Inc., has placed a handicap upoi.
some of the -best known and mosr
popular commercial varieties in the
northwest. Winesaps, Jonathans',
Rome Beauties and Arkansas Blacks
are givinir ratings which, in compar
ison with Spitzenbergs'',. Grimes'
Golden and Delicious, are not fair,
according to statements by growers
and buyers in various districts."
