TODAY IS DAY OF
DAYS FOR HOME BOYS
(Continued from npv 1.)
WELCOME TO THE ELKS.
All Medford rejoices at the installation of a lodge of
Elks, not only glad to number among its lodges such a
royal order of good fellows, but as also marking a step in
the city 's growth as a metropolis.
The Elks have ben aptly described as "the best people
on earth," and to have a strong local lodge to welcome
6trangers and entertain members adds greatly to the at
tractiveness of the city.
The installation of lodge 1168, B. P. O. E., marks the
culmination of a vigorous campaign of some duration, con
ducted in the spirit that has made Medford famous. It
was necessary to overcome strong opposition, to secure a
census of the city, and to appeal to the national convention
and secure special -dispensations, and the local members
are to b congratulated upon the success of their ef forts.
The characteristics of the Elks have been described as
follows : "A profound belief in God ; a spirit of benef ifenee
to the unfortunate: the cultivation of comradeship and
hearty enjoyment of the good things of life ; a cherishing
of the virility of existence and a cultivation of manly sen
timent" -
Founded in 1867, with a membership of thirteen, the
order now numbers over 300.000. made up of men in all
walks of life, among them the brightest and most attractive
of men. It is solely fraternal and wholly uncommercial
and practices a broad charity among the xinf ortunate.
Hence Medford extends a royal welcome to the Elks
and the many prominent members now visiting the city,
and may the local lodge grow in membership and prosper
ity as remarkably as has the national membership.
PALMER PARTY RETURNS
FROM CAMPING TRIP
Honore Palmer and Mrs. Palmer,
of Chicago, H. Carroll Brown and
Mrs. Brown of- Baltimore, governess
and children, W. A. Sumner and B.
Conner of Medford returned Wednes
day evening from a week's camping
trip at Blue Canyon. Several deer
were secured by the party, a bear
shot at and another flushed, all the
trout wanted were caught and a most
enjoyable time was had by all.
Mr. Palmer, who has extensive
property interests here, will remain
with his guests for a week or ten days
looking after his orchards and de
termining the future of 4Modoe" orchard.

September 15 was u good date for
the institution of I ht bulge. Hut 1 )is
trict Deputy Soviits was unable to
come until October. So T K. Daniels
wired J. I. I.anunis, grand exulted
ruler of the Klks, who appointed A.
Edgar Beard of Portland to visit
Medford as a special deputy and in
stitute this lodge. And today Mr.
Beard is here to institute the new
lodge. It is the close of a long, hard,
uphill fight.
In th plans for today it was first
decided to have a very quiet insti
tution of the lodge, but the progres
sive element of the local boys 'won
out and here the big time is.
More credit is due perhaps to T. E.
Daniels than any other local Elk for
the institution of the new lodge, lie
has been untiring in his efforts for
the lodge and has devoted much of
time and money to the organization.
Others who have worked hard and
are entitled to much credit are Clar
ence L. Reames, Carl Hoilbroner.
John S. Orth, W. II. Canon and W.
S. Crowell and Dr. Qoble.
The new lodge will start with some
40 charter members. In the list sign
ed bv those who wished to become
barter members are a number who
have failed to receive their demits
from other lodges and for this reason
will not be charter members. Fully
100 Elks live in and near Medford
and will at once .join the local lodge.
The lodge will be organized tonight.
Jor 30 days they will be unable to
andle candidates. On or about No
vember 1 applications from mavericks
will be received. And of these are a
great number.
After seeing tlie opera "A Knight
for a Day," finish up your evening's
pleasure with a good dance at The

AS THIS IS ONE OF THE LARGEST RELIABLE PIANO HOUSES ON
THE PACIFIC COAST, THE PEOPLE OF MEDFORD ARE BEING
MUCH PLEASED TO LEARN THAT THEY HAVE LEASED THE NEI-DERMIER-PALM
BUILDING FOR A TERM OF FIVE YEARS, WHERE
THEY WILL ESTABLISH THE FINEST MUSIC STORE BETWEEN
PORTLAND AND SAN FRANCISCO. WHEN SUCH A CAREFUL, CON
SERVATIVE BUSINESS FIRM MAKES A MOVE OF THIS KIND IT
MEANS MUCH FOR MEDFORD AND IS ONE MORE PROOF OF THE
FUTURE GROWTH OF THIS CITY. THEIR LOCAL REPRESENTA
TIVE, MR. WALTERS, SAYS MEDFORD WILL REACH THE 20,000
MARK BEFORE MANY YEARS.
