HOOD RIVER APPLE
CROP SOLD IN POOL
Entire Output Purchased at Fancy
Figurfes by Stelnhart & Kelly
Uniform Pack.
Hood River unci MoMi-r's iipilc
rop of 1!MI!I bus been sold lo Klein-
hurt & Kelly of Now York city nt
coiihiik-ruiiiv noove .J..io a uox, nic
highest price paid last year. The
yield ainoiiiils to about l.'ill carlouils,
or I O."i,.").")0 boxes, and the Mini paid
the growers between $225,000 and
$250,000. The siile was mude on the
basis of free on board I lie curs nt
the nearest stations.
J. A. Sleinharl of the purchasing
inn has been among the orchards of
Hood Kiver nnd .Mosier for several
luys nud pronounces them among tho
best kept in the country. He said:
Fancy Pack Does It.
"I cannot say too much for the
Hiver-Mosier apples. The puck of
this district is the finest in the world
and the most scientific, and it sup-
lirs the most epicurean ami exacting
trade. Wo do not consider that we
nrc paying u cent too much for it,
uud we uro not in business tor scn-
tiineutul reasons.
"And let mo sny right hero that
there is not tho slightest danger that
tho ncoplu of thin district nnd of
Oregon in general will overdo the mnt
tor of npplo raising. They cannot
overdo it. The ronson in very sim
ple, nnd easy to demonstrate, by
means of h few figures. In 1008 the
nimlc crop of the United States
amounted to 07,000,000 barrels; in
no year since then bus it amounted
to more limit 35,000,000 barrels. The
crop for the present season proba
blv will not reach that figure.
Business Cannot Be Overdone.
"The significance of these figures
is clear. lien it is considered inni
since IDOli the population of the eoun-
trv has increased probably more than
20,000,000 people, while the nnnuiil
apple output has net unity fallen from
07,000,000 to 3.'),O00,()()O bnrrels, it
an readily bo seen how impossible it
would be for npplegrowers in Oregon
ever to rnise so ninny apples ns to
over-supply the market.
"If the whole Hooil Ifiver-Mosier
district were one mass of orchards.
it wouldn't even supply New York
eitv, to suv nothing ot the rest or
the country, nnd F'uiiipe,
"The way these Oregon orchards
are kept up is n revelation. Why, the
ground between the trees is kept so
clean and free of weeds that you
could almost lay out n menl nnd oat
it off tho ground. You ennnot sny
that of any of tho eastern orchards."
Oregon Apples Unsurpassed.
"And then Oregon apples have oth
er advantages that the eastern prod
uct cannot compete with. Iu tho mat
ter of taste and coloring and, shape
they cannot bo surpassed, or equal
ed even, nnywhere else in the world.
"Oregon is the tipple gurdon of the
world. Tho whole state could go into
the business of rnising npples with
out danger of overstocking the mar
ket. '
"It is pertinent for me to say nlso
that the salvation of tho Hood Hiver-Mosier
district hits been its np
plegrowers' unions. I have come di
rect from New York to buy this crop
if there had been no unions I would
not have made the trip, and neither
would any other apple dealer, for the
reason thai none could have taken
lite, risk of being compelled to den)
with scattered growers, in place of
a compact union.''
