Chicago, Sept. t). ''Wlii'ii Col.
Roosevelt, now hunt ins lijr game in
diirkest Africa, departs this life he
will return to oartli again, his soul
inensed in the hotly of some small,
inferior,' jungle loving animal or
possibly an insect." '
This statement is made by XIrs.
William 1 Black, who has attracted
attention from time, to time by her
nursery of pots, which consists of
eight dogs, niue cats ami forty-eight
pigeons nil of them according to
their mistress, being possessed with
souls of humans who have departed.
Mrs. Mark is a member of the Im
mune society and other organizations
that protect animals.
"Col. Roosevelt's slaughter of
those animals in Africa is pitiful.'
said Mrs. Black. "I am not a sen
timentalist, but when a man does
such things for the sake of the sport
of it he is ti be pitied.
"A'e rend the other day that he
killed an elephant. I am just as sure
ns I am sitting here that wheu he dies
his soul will be sent back to earth
again in the form of some small ani
mal of even lower degree than those
he has been killing, perhaps an in
sect. "Roosevelt has only one chance to
save his soul. If he repents his soul
will be sent buck to earth again in the
body of a human. I believe that his
present greatness ns a public char
acter has been due to a steady rise
from one life to another as a human,
he had a wonderful chance in the
next life, which he has now ruined."
Mrs. Black does not believe in spir
itualism, theosophy. vegetrianism or
socialism. She holds the theory
that there exists a purgatory on
earth, and that this is carried out by
the transmigration of human souls
at the end of great physical cxistance
to the body and lower types of life
for sins committed.

DEEPEST HOLE EVER DRILLED
IN WESTERN HEMISPHERE
RRPUBL1C, Mich., Sept. 9 An
other achievement goes to the credit
of the Marquette iron range. It is the
boring of the deepest diamond drill
hole ever put down anywhere on the
Xurth American continent. A depth;
of 3205 feet was attained. The deep-)
ct hole ever bored hertofore was
put down in Arizona a year or more
ago. That one was bottomed at ap
proximately 31.")0 feet.
MOXTKKAL. Sept. '.). While there
is resentment in this country over the
new provisions of the Tuvac tariff in
so far as they affect the pulp and
paper industries, it is felt .both at
Ottowa and Qnebeo that nothing can
be gained by tho imposition of export
duties. The federal government, it
is officially announced, will not take
any action of a retaliatory nature,
and at any legislation it may enact
will be directed rather to final settle
ment of the difficulties.
It. can be authoritatively announced
that the future action of the Quebco
Provincial government will be in line
with the policy most acceptable to
the Dominion as a whole, rather than
any calculated to meet only the im
mediate situation as it is found in the
Province of Quebec.
The existing timber leases in that
province owned by Americans, includ
in more than 12,000 square miles, ex
pired at the end of the current year.
It is certain that the Provincial Gov
ernment will elect to follow the ex
ample of Ontario and make it a con
dition of all new leases that there
shall be absolutely no exportation. of
unmanufactured pulp wood to the
United States in so far as the Crown
lands are concerned which are owned
by the provinces. It would require
an act of the Dominion Government
to prohibit any such exportations
from other than Crown lands. Con
siderably more thau 50 per cent of
the unmanufactured pulp "wood ex
poprted from Quebec Province to the
United States is exported by farmers
from their own lands.

a letter written by and addressed to
herself ninety days ago that she sent
on a journey around the globe, hav
ing first arranged for its forwarding.
This is believed to be a record for

by their senders. It lost very little
time and covered approximately 300
miles a day.
Mrs. Bushnell posted the letter in
Minneapolis addressed to herself in
Calcutta. India. At the same time she
deposited two post cards, one to the
postmaster at Calcutta directing him
to forward the letter o Tokio, Japan;
the other to the postmaster at Tokio,
requeshig the letter be sent to the
rcuni address in Minneapolis.
Jus 90 days afters the letter nnrl
cards were deposited in Minneapolis
the original letter was received by
Mrs. Bushnell. There are but three
postmarks on the letter. The first
shows that it arrived in Calcutta, was
forwarded to Tokio. Japan, the same
day, and on receipt there was read
