at 35,000,000 barrels, an in
crease of .12,0110,000 barrels
over 1908.
Production east of the Mis
sisissippi river heavier than in.
1908; west of the Mississippi
river lighter than in 1908.
Quality east of the Mississip
pi river inferior to 190S; west
of the Mississippi river superior
to 1908.
Ben IT. Hiee, secretary-manager of
the second National Apple show in
Spokane, November to 20. 1909,
who recently returned from Buffalo,
where he attended the sessions of the
International Apple Shippers' Asso
ciation, thus summarizes the apple
situation based on reports by mem
bers of the organization as to the
condition . and probable size of the
yield of 1909 in the various districts
on this continent.
The following is a resume of the
reports as given out under the sanc
tion of the association:
The New England group has a
crop this year 20 per cent in excess
of last year. -
The central group's crop is a little
below last year, about 74 per cent.
The middle west or Ben Davis
group has a very light crop tliis year,
but it is equal to double the crop
of 1908.
The southern group has a heavier
crop than a year ago, and taken as
a whole, it is fully 150 per cent larg
er than a year ago.
Tn the Pacific group, Washington,
Idaho, and New Mexico show a con
siderable decrease as against last
year, but this is more than made up
by the large increase in Colorado
over last year, so that the Pacific
group as a whole will make as much
if not a greater crop of box apnles
than a year ago. Oregon's report
indicates a smaller crop.
Canada, not including the province
of Nova Scotia, as 'well as Colorado,
shows an increase of 75 per cent ov
er 1908, while the province of Nova
Scotia has eqaully as large crop as
last year, when a bumper yield was
harvested.
For the United Statss, the present
promise of the entire crop is slightly
in excess of a year ago, while for
aCnada the prospect is for a larger
crop tahn in 1908. The gain is placed
at !)0 per cent.
In the New England croup. New'
Hampshire only shovs a loss, while
1 the qaulity is labeled poor to good.
New York in the central group. J
tho wis a loss of 10 per cent .and all
except Michigan and Wisconsin in
the group show losses. The quality
is poor to good.
In the Pacific group Idaho, Wash
ington and New Mexico show losses,
hut the qaulity of all is good.
Isaac Tuck, of the New York pro
duce Bulletin, places this year's crop
i t 3.1,000,000 barrels, showing a
probable increase (if 12.000,000 bar
rels over 1908.
rOUTl.ANll. Sept. .'--Thomas H.
Shipp. secretary of the national con
servation connnis.-ioii, with of I ices
in Washington. 11. C. has spent a
couple of days in Portland conferring
with Chairman J. X, Teal and other
officials of the Oregon conservation
commission. Mr. Shipp attended the
conservation congress in Seattle, and
is studying the work of tho various
western state organizations before re
turning east.
'"Oregon is our shining example,"
said the national secretary at the
Portland hotel. "We have calls for
the Oregon report from all parts of
the nation; in fact, are utterly unable
to supplv the number requested.
Whenever we extend aid to any n
the state commissions we usually re
to them what Oregon has done.
and advise organization and proced
ure on vour line. I have come to the
state to get in closer touch and study
at first hand the Oregon coinni:
sion's achievements.
"The national commission, of which
I am secretary, was an outgrowth of
the Hooscevelt conservation meeting
held at the White House. Our national
commission is intended to be a sort
of clearing house for the state or
gnnizations. We now have 42 states
represented iu this association, and
interest in the work develops rapidly
each year.'
