On the fouth of July, last", we had the satisfaction of opening our first ditch which brought the water down on a five mile contour to the city and on the way supplied about 40 fruit growers and small farmers with water for this season, which has made irrigation an object lesson of the highest importance to the balance of the farmers in the country. This ditch was on the north side of the Rogue River and at the same time we did the work on a ditch on the oppo site side of the river which will cover when completed, several thousand acres . We have now under con struction a large cam.l which will bring water to the big orchards below the town on the' north side. There will be about (100 acres under this ditch. The noted, Elmer Shank or chard will be supplied with water from this ditch. This orchard will yield this season, it is conservatively estimated 16 carloads of Xcwtown Pippin and Spitzenberg apples, and they will be of a quality which will be top on the market nnywhero they may be sent. Big Pear Yields "Our pears this year are giving n big yield and they are of the finest been marketed, so far. and in every in.-tanee they have brought good prices. All our fruit this season is being handled by the Fruit Exchange, and by this means we are not only maintaining prices, but are gaining: from our particular section a repu tation for producing the choicest fruits. "Along with the activity in fruit growing and general farming, we are this year actively engaged in mining. There Is a body of ore blocked out which amounts to millions of dollars in va lue, and only awaits a railroad 13 We have the ' wealth of ah empire, ready for devel opment, nnd homeseekers can get in on the ground floor. Our soil and opportunities for irrigation, our cli mate, as well as our minerals and lumber interests, all mean great op portunities for wealth to those who will come and help develop the country-."
