RAILROAD ADMITS ERROR;
SAYS SHIPPER PROFITED
' SALEM, Or., Aug. 25. Admitting
that a mistake had been made in com
puting the charges upon a shipment
of a carload of potatoes from Iinblcr,
Or., to Butler, New, but alleging that
the mistake was in favor of the com
plainant and because the rate charg
ed was illegal in that it was below
the regular schedule, the O. R. & N.
company in answer to the complaint
of A. F. Wilson, before the interstate
commerce commission, offers to com
promise ahd refund Wilson $30.04 in
settlement. The total charges col
lected up the shipment were $342.04,
on a basis of 60 cents per 100 from
Imbler to 'Kansas City, and eight
cents per 100 from Kansas City to
Butler, and the railroad company al
leges that there is a thorugh rate of
75 cents, which is in excess of the
two locals and offers to compromise
on the basis of 68 cents, but prays
.that the order of the commission may
not require a continuance of the 68
cent rate for a period of two years.
