COST OF LIVING CHEAPENED.
Over One-Half Million People Bene
fited in Oregon Alone.
Whi.'ii you can save about 30 par
cent on tho cunt of an article and nl
(he same timo get the highest stand
ard nl' quality at a lime when most
manufacturers arc talking of raising
prices is something that consumer'?
should not forget. The price made
on this particular article is not a
price forced by competition, nor is
it ii price made in a spirit of philan
thropy. It is made strictly as a bus
iness proposition ; the idea being that
a. largo business with small profits
is better than a small business with
large profits.
Made of the finest grade of cream I
of tartar, it is put up in tins of u'l
sizes, tho most economical sizes per
haps are the 3-pound enns selling
for $1.00 and the 5-pound cans sell
ing for $1 .03.
It is now generally conceded by oil
that there is nothing on the market
showing more merit for quality and
price than the article hero referred
to Cleveland Superior linking Pow
der. ,
PORTLAND, Or., Aug. 21. The
peach -1 i Jl hold first plane in the
fruit display--, and is likely to for a
week or two lo come, and finer of
ferings of the fruit than are to be
had now are rarely seen any where.
They include Oregon and California
Crawfords, Lowells, Klbertas, Or
ange Clint's, Susrpiehaniuis and a few
other sorts. Crawfords from south
ern Oregon are now much in evidence,
but most of the other sorts" are from
California. The outlook is for plen
ty (if the fruit from this time on, and
next week promises to be the week of
heaviest fnipply.
The pencil crop this year, however,
is not as us that of last season,
and prices us a result may not work
down to the low level at which the
fruit moved a year ago. The best are
nowselling at 20 (0 25 cents a doz
en, and at proportionately low prices
by the box, and dealers say that home
preserving is already well under way.
Immense quantities of the fruit will
undoubtedly he put up next week.
Tho gniie season is now fairly
opened, mi dthere is a good variety of
tho fancy California fruit from which
to make selections. I'laeks and Mus
cats are fur the time most plentiful,
retailing ut cents u pound, and next
week there will be plenty of Tokays,
Malagas and other sorts.
Kine qualify pears are among the
interesting features of the market
at this time. Moth California and
southern Oregon fruit is to be bad
ind the best are quoted at 20 cents
a dozen. Good apples from southern
Oregon nrc also in the market now,
and dealers ask 20 cents n dozen for
the best. Apples will bo much more i
plentiful within a few weeks.

FRUIT AND ORNAMENTAL TREES.
