CONDITION OF THE
ENGLISH APPLE CROP
London Fruit Importers Issue Trade
Letter Dealing With
Apples.
Woodall & Co., fruit importers of
1 imloii, haw issued tliu following
trade letter regarding apples in tlio
United Kingdom:
Wo nKin hnvo tho pleasuro in giv
ing tliu figures of tliu iipplu crop in
the United Kingdom, from which it
will liu soen I Iki crop in very largo,
mid fully equal to' Unit of IiimI year.
The total imports from tlm United
Stales and Ciinndu ilii lin the past
season were 1,530.1 02 barrels, as
compared with 2,:i20.000 in 11107-8,
iin.l 2.0811,01)0 in 100(1-7.
(If IiimI season's receipts 1, 53!,-Ul-J
barrels, 171,3H!I barrels worn re
ceived into Liverpool.
I till ing the second acasou, which
ended in April, I ho ipianiity landed
in Livcriwol wan 201,381 barrels.
Consequent on the shortage, a very
lurgc quantity of boxes were received
from California, where tho crops we.rc
(food, and receipts to Liverpool
amounted to '210.100 boxen, against
108.721 boxen. Thews are reckoned
in our statistics at three to n barrel.
The season generally onnnot bo eon
Hidured to have been natiifuolory, on
with the reduced rei'eiitn a higher
rungo of prices might have been ex
lcctcd. Thin wan montly caused by
the Mior quality of tho fruit, and
much second ipiality wan nhipped,
whieh. nn no often ntated, does not
fill reipiirenienln, however groat the
scarcity. First nrrivaln in late An
(iint and during September landed in
wn'tehed eondition, especially Cann
tlmu, eaiined by the abnormally hot
weather at time of shipment ; and
notwithstanding ntated scarcity, ar
rivals in the middle of Oetoher were
21,0110 bnrreln in exeesn of previous
season. After thin, thorn wan a great
improvement both in quality and eon
dition in a good demnnd at improv
ed prieen. Maiiien heiiiK especially
attrai'tive; thin continued till tho end
of the month. Iludnon River fruit
wan conspicuous hy itn abnenee, and
continued no throughout. The short
age in early November heennio notico
able, being about 50,000 bnrreln lens
than previous season. Nova Sco
tians were arriving in Rood eondition
and quality, and, being a largo crop,
helped to fill the deficit from other
noureen. Altogether, nhipmenln left
much to hn denired, a largo proportion
with exceptional instances being poor
and wanty, making a wide range of
prieen, owing to the extraordinary
vnriation in quality and condition.
At the end of the month the decreane
in receipt wan 123,200 bnrreln, and
at the end of December wan over
213,000 bnrreln. Notwithstanding thin
the rmgo of prices wan not high, from
tho above-mentioned causes. During
tho spring some very Rood sales were
realized, which aro shown in diagram
enclosed.
The outlook for early shipments 1h
' nguin only moderate. Tho best va
rieties will do well if landed in sound
condition, but ordinary will bo in
torferod with by the English crop
should presont pronpects bo rculizod.
It can only be repeated that good
American and Canadian apples take
command of the market as soon as
obtainable. . .
