AT SEATTLE FAIR
Splendid Lessons Taught by Exhibit
of Methods of Good Roads
Building.

the first time at any world's, fair n
separate building has been devoted
to the good roads exhibit al the Alas
ka -Yukon -Pacific exposition.
This building is permanent and was
erected lit a cont of $10,000. It will
be used by the I'niversilv of Wash
ington us u school of good roads aft
er the exposition.
The exhibits arc arranged to work
mil for the benefit of the people of
the northwest, the economy of all cf
the important pavements and roads.
In the large room to the left of
the muiii entrance has been placed u
model of the Deception I'ass ipiarry,
which will soon be put in operation
by the stale of Washington. All n't
the equipment of this quarry is re
produced in miniature to represent
the state plant, which is probably tin:
best quarry in tho United States for
producing road building material
Models of different sections of
road, together with miniature road
building machinery, are placed in the
exhibit room. In the south front
room is the laboratory testing equip
ment, which will be used to enrry
out a scries of practical tests dnr-
ing tho summer.
Near the Good Itoads building have
been laid three short sections of
pavement, one asphalt, the other
brick, and the other wood block. Th'J
relative force required to draw a

roads will be determined by n scries
of experiments.

in a rowboat on Lake Naivasha, pur
sursuing a calf hippopotamus, Roose
velt had a thrilling escape from death
on Tuesday. He was accompanied
b ytwo natives. The hippos appeared
when tho boat was a long distance
from shore. One bull hippopotamus
dived under the boat, raising it.
Roosevelt then killed him. The oth
ers were frightened away by the flash
of the powder.
